Is a jam band? Interesting…
Not what I intended, but after reading my post again, I can understand how you took this from it.

Bob is jam band adjacent. Never ending tour + some collaborations with the Grateful Dead.

I've said exactly that about Stevie Ray Vaughn. It's honestly fascinating to me that people feel so strongly about him.
Is it just that he's technically skilled, kinds of like Satriani with more blue notes? Is it the energy he brings? I'll admit, he was an energetic MFer. I'm sure he put on a hell of a live show.
As far as sitting down and listening to SRV goes, though, nothing about his licks or his chord progressions inspires emotion in me. Or maybe it does, but the emotion is just that sense of energy and nothing else. And that make me wonder: do people dance to SRV?
I don't mean to run the guy down. There are artists who make me want to smash the stereo (Modest Mouse, KT Tunstall...) and SRV isn't anything like that. His music's just something that seems to be "there" at gatherings because certain types of people associate it with partying. And I feel like the way people talk about him implies there must be more to it than that, but I don't hear it.

that’s a decent one.
not once in my life have I ever spun a SRV record to listen through
I did see him live a couple times (once at jazzfest) and he did put on a good show; his rhythm section which later became part of the the arc angels was phenomenal. But you’re right, nothing he did personally really moved the needle.

Alright, I can tolerate tongue and cheek with the Stones and even Zeppelin, but you went too far with Merle......and the Kinks.
Kindly tell me which Sonic is closest to your home. You must be ended.

First band that comes to mind is Kiss.

IMO SRV was the first “super accurate” blues player in the mainstream that I can remember. Blues guys were kind of “sloppy” in general (not necessarily in a bad way) in the blues tradition - compare him to someone like Freddie King or Albert King for instance. There’s also a fluidity to his solos. Derek Trucks has the same type of thing but built on it and took it into the stratosphere. Hard to explain what I mean, the best I can say is, his solos tended to sound like long phrases as opposed to BB King or Eric Clapton who would do shorter phrases or at least phrases that sounded like one after the other. I love both those guys btw, they’re just different. There was a “natural” vibe to his improv that made him sound like he wrote the solo out beforehand.

I'm curious about the age of each person answering this. Might help me understand why they dislike some bands/artists that they do. To each their own though. I guess one of my answers to this would be Elvis. Many in my generation loved him so much but I just never "got" him.

I used to like a couple of their songs but anytime I see a Widespread t-shirt in a bar I double check that my truck and toolbox are locked up tight. Nothing says "I'll steal anything I can sell for a nickel" like a a Widespread t-shirt. Dislike of their fans eventually carried over to the band.
