Their contribution in a nutshell was showing that “punk” was a sensibility, not some lame aesthetic.

Elvis Costello
Radiohead
The Cure
The Smiths
Oasis
Black Sabbath
pretty much any C&W artist who came out after George Strait and Dwight Yoakem
pretty much all rap
The Replacements
Husker Du
any kind of Slayer/Anthrax/Suicidal Tendencies/etc. kind of speed/thrash/death metal.
any kind of Enya/John Tesh like new age dribble
most non R.E.M. 1980s alternative/college radio rock
I sound like a picky s.o.b. but I have more than a thousand albums in my music collection.

Lots of acquired tastes mentioned.
Pearl Jam fandom has always thrown me for a loop. I like the greatest hits, but they have their own SiriusXM channel?
Same with Bruce Springsteen.

Seems like a lot of these are bigger in the UK, or they just have a historic notoriety because of the music press. They aren't touring middle America.

Might have something to do with

although I adore the vast majority of their work.
Besides being part of the soundtrack of millions of peoples lives they were and continue to be wildly influential. Case in point: about 40 years after Led Zepplin's last studio album came out another band hit the scene with a sound so close and with their music engineered so similarly it was uncanny. The band has topped the rock charts with every album they have released. Their concerts aren't filled with old guys like me wanting to get a nostalgia rush but teens and 20 somethings discovering what 70s rock was all about even if they don't know that is what they are buying. I will do the opposite of what many reviewers do and mention Zepplin and not their name because unless you are living under a music rock you will easily associate one with the other.
While I was reading the thread I was trying to think of who I don't get. My tastes are so eclectic I kinda get everyone that has or had any level of buzz whether I like them or not. Probably my least favorite wide genre is Death Metal. It always feels like they are trying to commit aural manslaughter. That said I really appreciate the technical prowess of the groups popular enough that I have heard them.

Way too many to list... they mostly fall into the categories of mainstream rock/classic rock/jam bands/metal/modern rap...
Not saying I don't like songs or artists from the above and I realize a lot of the genres listed are very general... Also I realize the talent and why other people get a lot of those bands... just not really for me..

the clash are/were essential listening and influenced nearly everything that came after. They almost immediately shed the “punk” musical trappings after their 1st 2 albums and never looked back
I can understand “not getting” the Grateful Dead…they are most assuredly not for everyone. But the clash ARE for everyone that likes to rock out, even if you don’t or can’t appreciate the lyrics

If you haven’t listened to the podcast Stay Free: The Story of the Clash, it’s essential listening. The fact that it’s narrated by Chuck D speaks to their influence.
