There's a great version of Maybe I'm Amazed by the Faces, with Rod Stewart . You can find it on YouTube.

"Maybe I'm Amazed" could be one of the most beautiful songs ever written if it wasn't for Paul McCartney deciding to just Maca all over it with his high-pitched Cookie Monster vocals.

The Wings Over America version is the superior version because he doesn’t sound like a whiny bitch in it.

The frick are you even talking about? This might be the worst take on this board in a long time. Go away, Swifty.

this thread is hilarious

I offer up a simple premise and give my opinion on two examples from my perspective

over half the replies are people saying my opinion on my two examples is dead wrong, but offer no examples of great songs musically ruined by singers or lyrics in their own opinion

whether or not you think my examples are right or wrong is irrelevant if you have your own opinion on the premise of the thread

I love the cure and the smith FTR and I love these two songs too

but these two songs musically deserve better than talk and moan singing, an all time awful falsetto and “I was looking for a job and then I found a job”

this is the kind of lyrics a 13 year old girl writes

Yesterday I got so old
I felt like I could die
Yesterday I got so old
It made me want to cry

Go on, go on, just walk away
Go on, go on, your choice is made
Go on, go on, and disappear
Go on, go on away from here

And I know I was wrong
When I said it was true
That it couldn't be me and be her
In between without you
Without you

Yesterday I got so scared
I shivered like a child
Yesterday away from you
It froze me deep inside

Come back, come back
Don't walk away
Come back, come back
Come back today
Come back, come back
What can't you see?
Come back, come back
Come back to me

And I know I was wrong
When I said it was true
That it couldn't be me and be her
In between without you

Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you, without you
Without you, without you

truest thing you've said

still better than this type of opinion writing in your OP

quote:

I know calling out Robert Smith for shite vocals or shite lyrics is the most obvious thing ever

You went from calling out a particular song by The Cure to calling out Robert Smith wholeheartedly. You undermined your own thread title with that, yet you sit here whining that nobody is sticking with answering just your thread title. When you say something so incredibly stupid such as:

quote:

I know calling out Robert Smith for shite vocals or shite lyrics is the most obvious thing ever

you then open yourself up to criticism with nobody giving a shite about your thread title. I mean, it's like the most obvious thing evarrrrr

So your only opinions here are on your feelings about my opinions and you have no opinion on the premise?

It doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with my examples if you have your own opinion on the premise.

Yet you have made two replies stating you disagree with my opinion and my two examples of songs that represent the premise TO ME.

I am far from the first or even the 1,000th person to represent in the written word that Robert smith writes some total shite lyrics and sings like shite.

He also writes some beautiful lyrics and can sing like a haunted angel.

This is widely known and has been pointed out and discussed for decades. He is a lightning rod for a discussion about brilliance and shite in the same artist. It has been talked about on this very board.

In the song I referenced in my opinion his angsty teenaged girl lyrics and moan talk singing fall FAR short of the quality of the hook he wrote and the music the band came up with for this song. It is still a great song because the hook and music are top shelf.

The irony for me is he wrote the hook and his lyrics and singing drag down his own brilliance. TO ME.

The Smiths were great, but man… Morrisey... that dude is insufferable. His voice is shite and his lyrics are worse.

Live had some great songs until the vocals entered. Afghan Whigs were another of those bands.

He's one of the best singers ever.

This makes me think that you're talking about another band. One of the best lines in history was written by him.

I crashed down on the crossbar
And the pain was enough to make a shy, bald, Buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder.

Not every song has to be a T.S. Eliot poem. Sometmes a sentiment can be conveyed simply. Those lyrics are on par with these...
quote:

Money, get away
You get a good job with more pay and you're OK
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash

New car, caviar, four-star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team

Money, get back
I'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Ah, don't give me that do-goody-good bullshite

That’s some deep stuff right there. He sang, but to claim Morrisey is one of the greatest singers ever is a stretch.

I will give him credit for having a short stint in a band with Billy Duffy, then with Johnny Marr. That’s pretty impressive.

It's really not. Some of the phrasing he pulls off is extremely difficult. Those who say he's not never really explain what they mean.

Most of solo roger waters is what you are looking for. I tried to listen to his stuff over the years.

He has put out some good music ruined by him doing the weird talking, heavy breathing and whispering thing he does.

A lot of Grateful Dead songs by Donna Godchaux. When she'd keep it toned down she could really complement the band. When she started screeching it was just awful.
