I'm Late Gen Y. Lady Gaga and Adele were HUGE during my middle/high school years.

There's no way Ride the Lightning was a generational defining album, especially when compared with the others. Metallica was still unknown to the general public at that time.

Didn’t say you did. I just see that and Appetite for Destruction by Guns n Roses as being the two glaring omissions.

Niki Manaj Super Bass is another arguable one, as is Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard, but they did a pretty solid job covering pop punk/emo

like in the case of Ride the Lightning, some are recognized as 'after the fact' generational defining albums (meaning at the time it was not nearly as big but in retrospect it was really good). Leaving off Appetite for Destruction really invalidates these lists too. It was way more influential than 90% of the albums listed.

Late Gen X here.

When I think about my development as a music fan as a teen, that Dookie album cover is plastered all over my brain.

94-96 was just such prime period for me. Dookie, Throwing Copper, Weezer, Sixteen Stone, Purple, Superunknown, Definitely Maybe. The list goes on. Listening to that particular window of music is the closest thing to time travel that happens to me, I think. Lol. Great stuff.

100% spot on. I'm not of that generation but it sure was a touchstone for those that were.

It was as if John and Paul got back together at work when Axl and Slash announced their reunion tour.

I prefer to go by the Bible, where one generation = 33 yrs, instead of today where one generation = a high school class.

Early Gen X needs Purple Rain, Graceland, Appetite For Destruction and Murmur.

Late Gen X here. Nirvana’s Nevermind is possibly the only album from any era that every person knew beyond a shadow of a doubt would be on this list. It most definitely defined my early teen years.

And the album labeled Document is REM’s Document.

Early Gen X - I think everybody had Journey "Escape" and "Purple Rain" albums, but I definitely agree with Thriller, Synchronity, 1984 and Born in the USA. Those are no-brainers.
