I happen to like the genre so it doesn't bother me. Michael Foster Project, Dumpstafunk, Rebirth, Soul Rebels, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Anders Osborne, Trombone Shorty, Galactic, Dirty Dozen, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, ect
But some act as if that makes them the cultural center of the universe. Like having a million funk bands makes your music scene just unrelentingly amazing.

Think beyond Phish for a second. They had bands for almost every taste in music.
Well, for my taste, it was uninspiring to say the least.

I guess you are being sarcastic, but Prince is fricking awesome. So is Nile Rodgers.

Granted, they did pretty much invent funk, jazz, the blues, rock and roll, ect
And jazz fest was weak. I had gone 5 straight years and skipped this year. I went to Hogs for the Cause instead.

Didn't you bash the Varsity for having a couple of big name artists who weren't currently relevant?

It's just hilarious that OP is trying to knight Baton fricking Rouge as some great epicenter of modern musical triumph just because of an open mic night on Wednesdays
I've never touted baton rouge as some great musical city. It has been nice to prove that the ones who see no redeeming qualities in the scene know absolutely frick all about what's going on in the scene. Have you even seen a local baton rouge band in the last 5 years?
My point is/was that y'all have no idea if there's any talent here because you have this preconceived notion in your head that baton rouge music scene sucks.
Do we have a band right now who is going to set the world on fire and skyrocket to the top of the charts and win a Grammy? frick no but we're making strides in the right direction but yalls superiority complex won't even let you become a part of it and enjoy it for what it is.
And on top of all that no open mic nights have been mentioned in this whole fricking thread.

There is a HUGE difference between a 90s one hit wonder and a legends like Prince and Nile Rodgers

best act out of NOLA right now is Anders Osborne
Not just NOLA, imo.
The guy is criminally underrated

Nola was an important originator of jazz, but jazz didn't happen only in New Orleans.
Now, I'll give Nola credit for Bounce.

I really hope you aren't that ignorant. Baton Rouge, Memphis, St. Louis, and Chicago were all more influential blues cities. Rock and Roll? Funk?

Did you not see the eyeroll? Gosh, your sarcasm meter must be broken today

Funk?
Are you really trying to deny that New Orleans didn't play a central role in the development of funk music? Holy frick.
The Meters are the second most influential funk band of all time, right behind James Brown.

NOLA invented everything
Music itself wouldn't exist without New Orleans
