Music itself wouldn't exist without New Orleans
Although this is a funny troll post, there is some truth in that.
New Orleans, particularly Congo Square, was the only place in the Western Hemisphere where the slaves were allowed to gather to play music and dance. It is from Congo Square that truly American forms of music like Jazz sprung from. African slaves playing European instruments with African rhythms and melodies. Once African rhythms mixed with Ragtime, the first jazz music was invented by New Orleans musicians. Practically all American music can trace its origins back in some way to that music in that place.

It's just hilarious that OP is trying to knight Baton fricking Rouge as some great epicenter of modern musical triumph just because of an open mic night on Wednesdays
I don't think that's what he's saying at all. The people that bitch about shows are the ones who never go to them in the first place.
I think that is the point.

Why would someone go to a show if they don't like that genre of music or that particular artist?

I am actually going to Prince and I like his music OK..
However, I'm mainly going for the missus and the general experience of it...

Which has been my argument the whole time. The BR music scene produces some good music, but it's not the kind of music that's going to draw crowds. It's not because the music's not good and it's not because BR people are all morons (like most music snobs like to assert), it's because that most of the original music simply isn't their cup of tea. It's not "fun" "party" music. It's not the kind of stuff that hot chicks want to grind to, so the guys that follow those girls don't go. It's simple.

I got the memo a couple months back that her friends picked up some tickets and that I was going... I asked no questions, though I believe they were about $75/seat.. prob in the nose bleeds..
Nothing more american on the 4th than watching futbol all day then topping it off with Prince!

Well this thread has quite obviously shown that most of the ones who claim that they don't like the music that Baton Rouge produces has absolutely no idea what kind of music Baton Rouge produces.
Most have been told that BR's music scene sucks, and it used to suck don't get me wrong, and assumed it to be fact.
This thread is aimed at the music fans in baton rouge who, quite obviously now at least, have no idea what Baton Rouge has to offer so they eat up all the cover bands in tigerland and all the early 90s nostalgia acts that the varsity has to offer.
When in reality some very very good music is being played in dives all over the city night after night.

The main gripe about BR is that for the most part, there is a lack of big names. those are the names that people know and want to see. They aren't going to go see an acoustic Rhogz set at George's Place because nobody wants to see that. People want big shows

This post doesn't make much sense. Also, you have horrible grammar. Maybe one of those singer-songwriters can give you an English lesson

And therein lies the only problem with the baton rouge music scene. They refuse to support the local scene while bitching about the lack of one. Which in turn only pushes the truly special talents that we do have away to Austin, Athens or Nashville.
Support your local scene and the talent stays and the scene grows but people are content watching some shitty 80s cover band at freds at freds.
There's no way to blame the musicians of baton rouge. They're doing their job. They're playing some truly fantastic music all over the city.

Why is this so hard for you to understand? They are bitching about the quality of the music. It is great to support local product and everything, but in the end talent trumps all.

it makes total sense. there are a lot of people, posters in this thread included that shite on baton rouge bands and songwriters, but have never seen any of them live or listened to any of the music that they produce.
it's just funny to see the "lolBRsuxz" posts re: local bands and songwriters when there are a a handful of really good ones, and the local BR music scene is fairly close knit where there's a lot of commradery... BR holds it's own when it comes to writers/bands. homegrown bands i'm talking about. you can shite all over whatever touring act you don't deem to be relevant, and that's fine, but there's a lot of feedback from laffy and nola bands who actually like BR and the music community that exists in it.
