A lot of them still are. Madonna has become a literal parody of herself and folks just want her to go away.

How would somebody that isn't iconic get a say in who's considered iconic?

Beyonce was the 1st to come to mind. Hell throw in Britney in her prime.

I don't think she's wrong. There are certainly very few; if any. I could make the argument for Coldplay, Tool, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, or maybe Dave Matthews Band - I'm sure there are a couple of others I'm forgetting.

That's not to say that there isn't good music being made today (e.g., The War on Drugs), but I'm not too sure if they'd be classified as "classic" or "iconic" in the sense that she's talking about it.

Adele
Dionne is inflating her own status. Beyonce is already bigger than Dionne was and Adele is just as iconic.

Most music today isn't really music. Every few songwriters who actually write songs.

That's because it's just easier to use a song that is already made than to pay someone to write a song specifically for a movie.

I think that in order to avoid this thread becoming (or remaining) circular, y'all need to reach consensus on what defines "iconic".

As the OT is wont to do, the current definition seems to be "if I personally don't like the artist, he or she isn't iconic"

IYAM Lennon was an overrated songwriter and a terrible human being, but absolutely he is iconic.

The Stones don't do much for me but they are iconic too.

How is that funny?

I can go on Spotify and find whatever I want whenever I want. There is more music now and it's more accessible than ever.

The only people who laugh at that are too lazy to find better music.

That's what Friends are For was my 5th grade graduation song.

But frick her old asss.

Give me the Red Hot Chili Peppers over her everyday.
Started in 80s, went mainstream by 1991.
Icon Status implies they were unique, popular, and have staying power. I'd say that they have it. High School Kids today know their music. And they are still touring.
GTFO ole crotchety arse.

Top 50 songs from 1986. I just randomly searched for top songs for a year in the 80's. I ironically Warwick had the top song that year.

How many of these songs from 33 years ago you would recognize if they played on the radio? For me it's all 50. Now take 2019, do you think the top 50 songs of 2019 will be recognizable to someone who's a teenager in 33 years?

This x 100

Hint: it’s not on the radio.

Oddly enough, there is some great music to be found in the background of tv shows.

There is plenty of great music out there right now but it doesn't get played on the radio. The music industry has stopped seeking out truly talented musicians because it's easier to find someone who looks the part and use marketing and autotune to make them famous.

And in this scenario the studio has all the power when it comes to contract negotiations.

And on the other side of the coin, because it's so easy to produce your own music and distribute it on the internet, the truly great artists realize they don't need a studio to be taking half their income.

The internet has been great for music but it has been awful for the radio. It's their own fault though because the radio stations are owned/controlled by the studios.

I find that people who say there is no good music today are the same people that are too lazy to venture out past the mainstream radio stuff
