Beginning in 1970 until now so many I've lost count. Notables- Linda Ronstadt, the Allman Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, James Brown (I was 10 years old, and daddy would have killed my older cuz if he had known), Little Feat (no, they never got really big, but only those with the best tastes even deserved to like them).

Muse. They’ve since sold out Wembley.
In 2000, attracted by their album “Showbiz”, me and a couple dudes showed up at the old Cotton Club in ATL for a 99X show. No one showed up so the doorman let us in for free, crediting 99x for the tickets.
Small place. Single floor, bar in the back, stage was a small, maybe an 8’10’ half moon kinda deal. There was no more than 30 people in that room. At the time, I knew damn well Showbiz was a fantastic album and these dudes were headed for bigger things. It was astounding to me so few people showed up.
Unfortunately, thanks to many bottles of Red Stripe from the bar, we didn’t make an effort to meet the band after the show. Regardless, it’s by far the show I can look back on and be surprised to this day.
Showbiz is STILL a solid album.

I swear I was there too, but didn’t know anything about them. Was that during winter quarter 1991 in the white house across the street from the Amsterdam Cafe?

Eddie Brickell & the New Bohemians in front of less than 10 people at the Theater Gallery.

Pretty sure that’s the house. Went there a few times. It was summer 91. I stayed for summer my first year to establish residency.
Even after talking to my buddy, I was never really sure it was Green Day until this article came out years later.
That time Green Day played a house show in Auburn.

Evanescence at the Cajun Heartland State Fair in Lafayette in the early 2000's. "Bring Me to Life" had just been released on the radio and they were promoting the record. I just remember how insanely good Amy Lee's vocals were. And also, the sound cut out during "Bring Me to Life" which was their last song and everyone had been waiting for it, they kept playing, the sound came back on at the end of the song... crowd is pissed and starts chanting "play it again!" but they did not. was kind of lame.
12 Stones in Mandeville at some outdoor amphitheater around the same time. "Broken" had just been released and started getting radio play.

I've seen a bunch of prog rock bands before they made it big, big being a relative term for prog rock.

Saw GunsRoses on their initial tour after they released Appetite. They were opening for Motley Crue, Nov of '87. Album had not hit it big yet. A couple of folks from school had also gone and we all thought they were fabulous.

WSP
311
DMB
Tyler Childers
Billy Strings
These stand out as bands I all saw at clubs or festivals before they started being bigger rooms.

Saw No Doubt open for Public Enemy at the Varsity in 1992. I remember thinking "This band is OK, but the chick singing is cute"

KIX - Saw them at least a dozen times at several different venues prior to their debut album in '81.
Billy Squier - When he was still with a band called Piper & warmed up for KISS

Except they were called the New Bo's by Dallasites back then. Edie didn't get star billing until their album release by Geffen, I think it was.
Another group that you could catch playing in Dallas bars and restaurants in the 90's were The Dixie Chicks, the original group that was four Chicks instead of three.

I was at that show. If I remember correctly, it was the guitar player's birthday. Cougar thanked "the boys from KISS" for letting them open.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds at The Chimes and Divinyls at a live music club in Southdowns are all I can think of at the moment.
