For you big fans, Isbell did an interesting interview on the Marc Maron WTF podcast a year or so ago. Patterson Hood did a separate episode. They each talked for an hour or so.

You might have to buy his premium app to hear those older episodes.

Wow, awesome read. I don't have anything to add, just wanted to post in the most interesting thread I've seen on this board.

after reading the article and listening to the song a few times over the weekend, the most unbelievable part of the story is that this took place in the 80's. I always assumed it was long long ago. Crazy

hate to school ya NATidefan, but the TVA built their first dam was the Norris Dam in Tennessee (was built from 1933-1936); the first TVA dam built in Alabama was the Wheeler dam built during the same years. there were smaller, localized dams, but none that covered the scale the TVA system did. the history of it is kinda hard to follow but you can follow fairly well via wiki

Probably my one biggest irk with the modern day everyman Isbell fan is that they've never stood in the thunderstorm that was an early to mid-2000s 40 Watt Truckers show and been absolutely shell shocked by an Isbell Decoration Day.

Hate to school yeah Boderah, but the Wilson Dam, built on the Tennessee River between Colbert & Lauderdale Counties and right in the heart of the Florence, Muscle Shoals area) was opened in 1924 and construction began on it in 1918 during Woodrow Wilson’s administration. The TVA wouldn’t be created until May 18, 1933, a full 15 years after construction began and nine years after it opened. The dam would come to fall under TVA control after it was created. The damn is not particularly small as the lock lift is the largest one east of the Mississippi.

Great song. Great story. Thanks for posting. Huge DBT and JI&t400U fan but here's where I'm at with Isbell. He took me places in his songs and I felt his contemplative soul cleansing from his stuff with the Truckers through his growth and change inro his solo career. We were on the ride with him and experiencing it as he did, but then somewhere along the way he separated himself and went from contemplative to preachy. I have kind of lost my desire to listen to him ever since. It was somewhere between his transition from "Something More than Free" to "The Nashville Sound". Maybe that "God complex" happens to most guys like that but it makes me kinda sad. He's gotten sober and I think he somehow believes that people give a shite about his political opinions because he doesn't write from a first-person perspective much anymore. Its gotten a little too preachy for me.

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. I always assumed it was fiction given Isbell's songwriting skills. It's one of my favorite songs of his.

I don’t let his political viewpoints keep me from listening to him. I love his music

J/k listening to “Children of Children” now.....Jesus what a song. Although I will say his last album was a disappointment to me politics aside.

A good many of their songs that tell stories are substantially true, with maybe a touch of dramatic license.

When you are on one of the best runs of a generation, at some point it’s bound to get some ups and downs eventually.

In this case, the down was still pretty darn good, but when the bars that high...

The last Isbell show I went to he bitched about trump for like 45 minutes about how he puts Mexicans in jail

Then he tried to put his wife on stage to play her crap and she wouldn’t get off even though everyone was booing and yelling how girls suck

It’s worse than Garth brooks snd trusha yearwood
