Harmony, punk, energy, that build up of energy. Very grunge
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
Really encapsulated the pulsing rage of the grunge era and genx at the time. Kind of in-line with PJ's "Not for You". Love how raw and almost 'ugly' this song is.
Without Nirvana there is no "grunge" outside of Seattle, imo. Nirvana hit and every label rushed to Seattle to find the next Nirvana. Without that attention, the whole genre never would have taken off. It's interesting, though....if you listen to the big grunge bands of the era, there are quite a few different genres represented in the larger picture. Pixies/Nirvana/Mudhoney more on the punk side, PJ/Screaming Trees/Pumpkins on the rock side, AIC/ Soundgarden/Melvins more on the metal spectrum. There's quite a bit of diversity under that "grunge" umbrella.

I love AIC but I don’t like calling them grunge. The musicianship is too good to fall in that category imo.

1. Something In the Way and Dumb (honorable mention Rape Me and Come As You Are).
2. Ultimate? Yes. Best? Maybe.

I don't really consider AIC to be a grunge band - they were more of a metal band. I mean, they toured with Van Halen. To me, the true test of a grunge band is did you put out a record on Sub Pop? Nirvana, Soundgarden, Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, L7 all pass that test. (Pearl Jam fail to meet that standard and if you want to call them a 70s hard rock band, I'm listening.)

Grunge is an aesthetic, not a musical style

I agree I always considered AIC a Metal band first. Their first album was pretty heavy and came out before Grunge was known.

I agree about AIC being more metal. But touring with VH isn't exactly the metric to determine a metal band. I saw VH 3 times. The opening acts were Private Life (1989- a pop rock band with a few hard rock elements, but make Bon Jovi look like Slayer), Kenny Wayne Shepherd (2015- VH's last ever show), and Kool & the Gang (2012).

IMO, they are far and away the best band out of that Seattle scene/era... followed by Mudhoney..
I think Dive is their best song, a #2 is too close over quite a few choices..

Love Buzz and Scentless Apprentice
Personally, I'm more of a AIC fan of all the Seattle scene bands.

I disqualified that one for me, since its a cover... but School and Negative Creep off of Bleach are in my running for #2..

AIC
I have always favored the more punk leaning bands, over the metal bands from that scene...

There's nothing metal about AIC.

In Breed
Not even close to being a legitimate Nirvana song. They had “Breed” and “In Bloom.” In Breed is notably absent.

On a Plain
My man.
I still remember the first time I heard this song after the tape flipped when I was like 12 years old. On an album full of huge hits it was instantly the first song that sounded like I had been familiar with it forever in a good way.
Has always been far and away my favorite nirvana song.
Second is sliver or about a girl
