I’ve never understood the entire Billy Joel thing. It’s always baffled me

I mean, he's a great piano player who wrote catchy hits in various styles who has been around for like 5 decades. It doesn't seem that baffling even if he's not your cup of tea.

Very good song. It reminds me of his early stuff like Piano Man and My Life. I like a lot of his stuff, but the later things like We Didn't Start the Fire, Downeaster Alexa, and River of Dreams he was trying too much to fit in with the sound of the time.

The video for the song is really cool. They used AI to have the 70s, 80s, and 90s versions of Billy Joel sing the song.

I went to buy a new helicopter at a wine event in Cali a few years ago. They had a cover band. Only played his newer stuff. Caused quite a ruckus.

Everything up to about 1978 was great. The Stranger was his last great album. After that, it was largely bubble-gum pop.
He is a genius level composer, song writer and piano player. He is also a great performer who sounds just as good live as recorded. Just a shame that he could not match his music from the seventies.

I always liked Glass Houses ('80). Bought that album when it first came out. His other 80s albums weren't as good as his earlier work but still always had a great song or two. An Innocent Man, Goodnight Saigon, She's Got a Way (Live).

What’s not to like.
Goodnight Saigon and Allentown are my two favorites.

He put out 52nd Street after the Stranger. You can tell the Stranger's success gave him the freedom to do what he really wanted. 52nd Street is very jazz infused and overall a better album top to bottom musically than The Stranger despite not having a Scenes from an Italian Restaurant on it.

He gets extra points for pulling Christie Brinkley in her prime too.

I’m cool with him. Saw him in Jacksonville around 2006 or so, maybe a little later. Very good show.

My daughter is only 25 and he’s her all-time favorite. Pretty proud of that considering some of the crap many of the 20-somethings are listening to. She lives in DC and takes the train up to see him at MSG once a year.

That stretch from The Stranger through The Nylon Curtain is about a good of a run of music that any one man can have. Having said that, I absolutely hate An Innocent Man

Tiny Dancer (how is this not on greatest hits)

I was curious about this so I went and checked it out. Looks like it was a combination of being too long (which meant it wasn't played as much on the radio back then) and people being butthurt about "jesus freaks".

It ended up being on the re-release of Greatest Hits Vol 2, for what it's worth. And it did make it onto the 1970-2002 greatest hits album.

The song didn't even really rise that high in the charts, so I'm wondering if Almost Famous helped revive it a bit and make it more well known than it was during the album release.

I'm a big fan. Piano Man makes a fun arrangement for acoustic guitar, and it gives me an excuse to use the harp rack. Scenes is an all around fantastic song. The kind we need more of.

Of course, I don't like every song. Captain Jack is way too dramatic for the subject matter. Uptown Girl is more corniness than I can take. But I'm an overly critical jerk, so it all works out.
