Gimme Halsey all day, every day, and twice on Sunday before Billie Eilish when it comes to mainstream artists getting into rock.

I like her first two albums so will have to give this one a listen. Normally hate this type of music. Cannot stand Taylor Swift.

Can’t stand her voice. The new Bond theme she croaks through is horrible.

But it isn't "rock

Bro you are literally telling people that a song isn't rock because of some ambiguous requirements. Honestly this wouldn't bother me as much if I didn't want rock to grow as much as I do. The problem is anytime a mainstream rapper or pop star experiments into rock you have people immediately saying shite lie, "thAts nOt ReAl rOcK" You see the same shite in the metal and Indie world

In any genre of music, there are parameters that make that genre what it is. For established genres these requirements are not ambiguous. At this point for rock they are pretty set in stone. Vary those parameters too much and the music may no longer be a part of that genre. Take the harmony of a rock song and start adding a lot of extensions and you move toward fusion. And in my educated opinion, simply adding a distorted guitar to something doesn't make it rock any more than adding one or two major 7th chords makes something jazz. Or adding a pulsing synth or four on the floor kick makes something EDM. Borrowing a single technique from another genre does not usually change the genre of the track. She may be borrowing a spice from rock, but that doesn't mean the dish is all of the sudden "rock". If simply adding a distorted guitar to a track makes something rock, well then "rock" has been watered down to the lowest and simplest denominator.

If me critiquing the track is gatekeeping to you, or prevents you or anyone else from listening, or even worse, prevents Eilish from really going rock, I am truly amazed at the power I wield, Bro.

I'm with dawgfan on this, you really are being kind of a gatekeeping douchebag. It's not the first thread you've done this in.

Really, it's clear that Billy Eilish is bringing back Bossa Nova.

Also, Taylor Swift is obviously the modern resurrection of bebop jazz.

Happier Than Ever starts out slow almost Sinatra like but then morphs into a total rock song

I had never heard it before, but they cranked the shite out of it on SNL this weekend:

I agree with the gatekeeping criticism. This performance came off very well live (although not sure where the bass is coming from). Live/acoustic drums and quality distortion DO make something rock. I wish there was way more of this type of thing out there.

This performance makes it seem to me like she and her brother legit have an appreciation for hard rock/metal.

The arrangements and production are far and away the best thing in American pop music right now

Fify. Aurora is the best thing in pop right now. Interestingly enough, a song Aurora wrote and recorded as a teenager is what inspired Billie to make a real effort at a musical career.

Thanks for the link, I enjoyed that. For this song, she strikes me as a female version of Gerard Way or Anthony Green from Circa Survive.

Just watched the Happier performance on SNL. I'm not a fan of hers but that was a good performance. When the song transitions to electric, it really pops and she does a good job with the energy.

a pop star making actual emotional music with electric distorted guitar and real drums. this isn't a bad thing for the youth to be into.

Go watch some of the other live versions out there. They are screaming the lyrics back at her. And she doesn't just stand still - she has a metal vibe to her during these performances. 100% chance this will rub off on at least some of her young female audience. Don't be surprised if we see a metal type of album from a mainstream pop artist in the next 5 years (especially with Miley doing the Metallica thing.)

Doja Cat did a rock version of her song Say So last year.
Doja Cat- Say So (MTV EMA 2020)

She played the rock version live in Paris a couple of months ago.
