Jason and the Scorchers - Nashville
Fetching Bones - Chapel Hill
If they do, then The Connells is the answer to the title question.

Remember Dash playing Mobile in mid, late 80s. Anybody ever hear of The Vomit Spots? They were out of Mobile about the same time.
Also, Kevin Danzig Band won Mobile's Battle of the Bands in 1987 or '88.

Pez Band from the Chicago area in the late 70s-early 80s along with The Houndz from the same period of time.

Soulhat
I came here to also post this. Soulhat was the 1st band that came to mind.
I also do not know if The Connells qualifies, or if they had too much success, but felt like they had potential to be bigger.
I also agree with Dillon Fence which was mentioned earlier.

There was a band out of North Carolina back in the early/mid 90s called Still Rain. I caught them at a club in Florida one night and they blew me away. I figured they would end up being huge but they split up and made other lesser (IMO) bands like Sevendust and Double Drive. Self titled release from 1994 totally kicks arse.

This is from the 70's but there was a band called Eric Quincy Tate, who I think started in Texas but wound up in Georgia that was pretty damn good but they never made it mainstream. One of their members was offered a job with Ted Nugent's band but I don't think he ever took it.
