Since I've no music board cred to lose, I'm going to say the Revivalists.
Their last album was "meh" overall but had a few great songs. And they play one of the most best live shows I've ever seen. I'll never forget the first time I saw them at Voodoo. Then they stole the show the next time I saw them when they opened for JJ Grey & Mofro at the Varsity.
Eric Lindell is another one of my favorite NOLA based musicians.
I'll definitely have to check out some of these recommendations.
Since I did it for the Best Album thread, I figured "why the hell not" and made a playlist based on the bands listed. This playlist is pretty damn solid.
TDs' Best of NOLA Playlist

when I was in college in the late 80s cowboy mouth was a revelation
you'd go to their shows and walk out a foot above the ground

Anders Osborne Band gets my vote. Especially with John Gros on the keys.
Can't really deal with the lead singer for the Revivalists, but like the band itself. Little Freddie King is cool, but he is pretty low energy. Johnny Vidacovich Trio (whoever he is playing with) would definitely be up there for me. I'm a fan of Earphunk as well.

GPJ & the running partners, Sonic Bloom, Gravity A, and Cole Williams Band all deserve consideration but have not been mentioned.
Of those mentioned, I would have to give the nod to Anders. Although Galactic used to be the shite with Houseman, I don't like their new sound as much.

Anders Osborne is my vote. Each time I see him, he has new energy and continues to amaze me. He has his first headlining full North American tour this past winter.
He style and tone is always evolving and he has yet to even let a slight bit off the gas of inspiration for new materal. That man has a lot of hurt in his soul has is getting out.
Glad he is clean and will be around for years to come.

They're an interesting comparison. Both bands are arguably more spectacle than substance, yet completely different in their approach. Cowboy Mouth is all about hyping up the crowd with energy, enthusiasm, and kick drum, while Mutemath dazzles them with crazy light shows. Put them together and you have either the best or worst live band of all time, not sure which.

mutemath is an entertaining live band with good songwriting and incredible musicianship... darren is one of the best drummers around.

True, but their prime in the early 2000s was something to behold. "Jenny Says", "Love of My Life", "Disconnected", ect all were awesome back in the day. I think the band was still pretty good through their "Voodoo Shop" album, but have not been anywhere near as good since.

Do you consider the early 2000s to be Cowboy Mouth's prime?
I'd say by the mid 90s they had begun to develop into a nostalgia act. Don't get me wrong there is a lot of money to be made in nostalgia/family rock and one can survive on a steady diet of Gretna Fests, Family Gras, etc...

I do, because "Jenny Says" came out in the early 2000s and that was their best song and biggest hit. I heard it on 104.9 ad nauseum for years as a punk kid never knowing that was a band from just down the road until they played at the Ascension Bicentennial.
