100 Greatest Songwriters: Rolling Stone Magazine

This list really fricking hates non-Top 40 musicians.

When Kurt Cobain is the heaviest musician on this sort of list something is wrong.

quote:

4.) Chuck Berry

I have never understood the infatuation with this man. I understand how influential he is, but for anyone to say that he is a better songwriter than all of the folk musicians of the '60s and '70s sans Dylan is ludicrous.

Speaking of folk, where the frick are David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Stephen Stills?! They have other duos on this list.

Hank Willliams should be in the top 10 - he influenced several generations of country musicians.

Also can't believe that RS wouldn't know how Hank died - it wasn't a car wreck.

Since it is Rolling Stone, I refuse to click the link.

I didn't see Prince in the top 10. Where did he rank? He should be top 10 easily.

Pretty the much the safest list possible. Hard to argue with most of the inclusions, but the way they're ranked...

You mean Rolling Stone made an incredibly safe, stodgy list that leans way too heavily on 60s and 70s icons? That seems so unlike them.

I'm not even going to look to see how poorly Paul Westerberg is ranked. To say nothing of D Boon.

if none of those are on the list, then it sounds to me like they got it pretty right

Anytime Rolling Stone makes a list of Greatest anything I translate it to Favorite. And I don't care who the editorial staff of Rolling Stone's Favorites are.

A top 100 list of songwriters that does not include Warren Zevon on it is just about worthless.

Holland 1945 is better written than any Bob Dylan song; and I'm not even a fan of shoegaze hipster music... show Ruston some respect Rolling Stone!

Scrolled through the whole list. Some are legit, some are fricking ridiculous. Taylor Swift? Kanye?

And the list should be named 100 greatest pop/country/soul songwriters since the mid sixties, cuz there are some outstanding ones from earlier eras and different genres who were left off that would be on a comprehensive list.

Taylor Swift

No doubt she's a great songwriter. I don't care for her music and I don't think she can sing very well, but her songs with the exception of Bad Blood, have great writing. Kanye, on the other hand, not talented in any way as far as I'm concerned.

So they lumped Lennon and Paul together so they could give it to Dylan?

Every other duo is together

And seriously...where the hell are the Allman Brothers?
