Kristofferson at 87 is criminal, I understand some people may not like him as a performer (I do like him very much), but he was an absolute genius as a songwriter. They seem to have put too much of an emphasis on singing capabilities rather than pure songwriting.

LULZ

The entirety of the list is pretty criminal.

Lack of complete time frame of modern music, rampant PC, idiocy, placements which look to be generated from a Wiki search, it´s bad. Really bad.

That said, it could be worse.

Rolling Stone is so ridiculous. They're like the Mike & Mike of music. That is not a compliment.

Christy Moore not in the top 10 makes this list invalid.

Don't know about Berry

Agree - Chuck was a phenomenal player and extraordinarily gifted entertainer, but his songwriting was repetitive - much like ZZ Top or AC/DC, if you've heard 1 Chuck Berry song, you've heard them all (and I'm not derogating - it says a lot for an artist to consistently deliver what his or her audience expects).

On the other hand -

Put down the crack pipe - Smokey is a legitimate top 10 songwriter.

For all practical purposes - 1960s Motown songwriting WAS Smokey and a couple of other cats.

Yeah, I love Chuck Berry, but let's be honest, when he recorded for Chess Records, he let Willie Dixon write his songs for the rather obvious reason that Dixon was a better songwriter. Berry was a great player and performer.

Pretty well know fact that Marty McFly came up with Chuck Berry's biggest hit.

Neil Young 17??
Ray Davies 27th???
Pete Townshend 29th???

I love James Brown, but I sure as shite don't think of him as being a great songwriter. A great performer, a great singer, a great dancer -- all of those things.
And Joni Mitchell 9th -- well, I shouldn't bang on her, I never listened to any of her shite. That easy listening California 70s crap really isn't my bag.
