My point isn’t “all comedies are unrealistic”

His was characters need to feel real to be funny and that’s just not true.

I'll give it a watch then. If they are taking shots at both sides and it's kinda even I'm good with it. Just can't stand when it's obvious they are just bashing the right while acting like their shite don't stink.
Eddie Murphy's entire character, in my opinion, is making fun of a lot of black culture, stereotypes, and pervasive beliefs. Jonah Hill's parents is a play on a lot of white people. Laugh at both, don't take it serious, and you'll be fine.

Warning though, there are a lot of n-bombs in the movie so if you don't want kids in the house hearing that, watch it when they aren't around/awake.

And I strongly disagree with that, and I'm sure pretty much any serious movie critic would as well.

A sense of realism needs to be there in order to create a point of reference for the viewer.

Does that mean the characters have to act just like all the regular joes that we see every day on the streets? Of course not. But there needs to be a grounding in reality.

And like I said...caricatures (exaggerated reality) can either be handled well or not so well.

Sounds like the critic contends that it was not handled well in this movie, and thus it wasn't very funny.

More than just black and white, it's Muslims and Jews. And they definitely make fun of both sides.

Murphy was pretty funny in You People as the strict Muslim father disapproving of the white Jewish fiancé. And yes it was a caricature and not at all how anyone (well, probably not anyone) would react in 2022.

lots of people complaining needlessly about a movie they haven't and won't even see.

Premise that's been done thousands of times but all of the sudden it's now "woke" according to fricking Breitbart because of course.

Listen, if all it takes to be grounded in realist is being based on some kind of person or concept of a person than what isn’t?

I don't know what kind of woke message he saw in the movie, I didn't see it. There's a bunch of modern sterotypes in it, along with some racial and religious humor, but we knew that going in. The movie is obviously satire as much as it is an interracial rom-com. We thought it was a pretty funny movie. If you see it as some sort of woke thing, that's just your own preconceptions reflected back at you.

I just came here to say Jonah Hill sucks.

Come on. Superbad. 21 Jump Street. He was funny AF in those movies. He was the funniest thing in Knocked Up. He's gotten a bit pretentious now, but that dude can be hysterical when he goes for it.

Wolf of Wall Street, War Dogs, This is the End, 22 Jump Street, etc.

Plus small but funny and effective roles in movies like Grandma's Boy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Walk Hard, 40 Year Old Virgin, etc., etc.

I can see why he wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but to say he doesn't have a great fastball is ridiculous.

Exactly! I enjoyed it. Eddie Murphy has made a career of making fun of just about every stereotype he can think of. It doesn't seem to bother him.

So a warning for n bombs, but f bombs are just fine?

Dude, to plenty of people on here just the mixed race relationship is a woke message.

The podcast friend and her whole rant about whites and blacks never bring cool probably crossed the woke line, but that's not a huge part of the movie.

Out of all the interracial couples I've known over the years, exactly zero of them were together for political reasons.

That's not really a woke sentiment, go back some decades and you'll find whitey saying the exact same shite.

Huh? I would hope not! I am saying that to plenty of people on a movie promoting love between a mixed race couple is seen as "woke" just for that alone.

You sure about that? I know people in real life who are every bit as ridiculous as Eddie's character. No, that's not the norm for every black father out there. But people like that do exist.

If the people in the relationship aren't in it for "wokeness," what makes it woke? Just depicting an interracial couple doesn't make it woke in any way. It's a rom-com. No other pairing of different race couples ever gets accused of wokeness. But make a movie or show focused on a white guy dating a black chick, and suddenly there's some sort of agenda in play. It's idiotic.

You're not gonna find too many people on here familiar with hoteps like the character Eddie played.

Ever pay attention to any thread about commercials with the constant bitching about interracial relationships?

I agree with you, in principle, but plenty of people don't.

Let's be real here, the critic for Breitbart had this stance decided before the movie even came out.

He knows what gets clicks.
