This guy sums up my feelings about the movie perfectly

quote:

Watching You People, the latest big Hollywood “comedy” from Netflix, is another depressing reminder (and example) of the ongoing collapse of Hollywood.

Apparently, we can’t have comedies about people anymore. Everything has to be political. The human experience and the human condition is no longer appropriate. The Message not only takes precedence, but the human experience is shoved aside to create one-dimensional Message Carriers instead of flesh-and-blood characters.

quote:

Comedy only works if you stretch reality. But reality is the key. If the audience doesn’t believe the characters are real, they won’t laugh. Why? Because truth is funny, fake is not.

Nobody, and I mean nobody in You People, is anywhere near real. They inhabit this movie for only two purposes: 1) to fire off sitcom-level punchlines and 2) to deliver the Woke Message. Not only are these characters lacking an inner life or even the sense of an inner life, but you also cannot picture them living any kind of life when the camera is not on them. They are like those Westworld robots who only power on when it’s time to perform.

Well now I want to see this even less than I did before.

I'm not shocked that people think this movie is terrible. The trailers convinced me of that.

Downvotes incoming for daring to post an opinion that talks bad about modern movies and their inability to not be politically left leaning...

Just consume "next product" and shut the hell up.

I've only seen the preview that Netflix runs automatically when scrolling through the menu, but it did nothing to make me want to watch. I usually find Jonah Hill to be very funny, but the scene they chose to play was just cringe.

From the review of someone writing for a very clearly right-wing establishment. Surely that isn't biased either right?

In all seriousness, it's on my list to watch. Folks I know enjoyed it and said it was a decent comedy, nothing ground breaking. So that's pretty much what I'm expecting at this point.

Maybe, maybe not. All I know for sure is you won't admit the reviewer is right even if you ultimately end up agreeing.

If you name the best comedies from the early 2000 you’d realize how untrue this is.

Nothing realistic about Ron Burgundy or Zoolander. But those are funny movies.

Maybe?

Would you say the same from a review from virtually any other news source, given most lean left, or would you consider those to be legit?

Or what about paid for access sites whose entire livelihood is dependent on media access to scoops and "exclusives?" When those comes out with glowing hyperbolic reviews, do we consider those to be suspect?

Why does it seem like only negative reviews are subject to being consider "review bombing" but not obvious over the top positive reviews?

You don’t have to be right-wing to see the problem of political activism in movies and TV, but yes, being on the other side of the aisle seems to magnify the absurdity of it all. The problem, though, is the people on the left watching this dribble and acting like what those right-wing people are saying isn’t true.

This is accurate.

The characters (especially the parents) aren't "real" because they are caricatures exaggerated for comedy. This is pretty typical, right?

I'm definitely right-leaning, and I watched it. I thought it was a pretty funny movie and laughed out loud in a couple of instances. It wasn't great, but I wasn't expecting that. I also thought the movie made fun of both sides of the spectrum, and pretty evenly at that.

If you don't like Kenya Barris or know who he is going into this movie I suggest you don't watch it.

Drivel.

Not trying to be an a-hole. I agree with you. I just want to help you out.

Drivel and dribble are the same thing, but you use drivel to describe something as nonsense or crap, and dribble to describe actual saliva running out of the mouth.

I’m not going to watch this drivel, by the way, thanks to you. Cheers!

I'll be honest, I don't follow critic reviews much anymore. Left-wing or right. Critics on both sides seem to be really far out of touch with the actual viewer and you bring up a good point about generating clicks as well.

I most often just watch something that seems appealing from previews or on the content it covers and make the decision whether I like it myself.

Come on. Superbad. 21 Jump Street. He was funny AF in those movies. He was the funniest thing in Knocked Up. He's gotten a bit pretentious now, but that dude can be hysterical when he goes for it.

It's the writer's opinion. By its very nature it is biased. But IMO he described the flaws of the movie perfectly

Of course there is. It's a send up of the pompous, air-headed news anchor. That's a reality so ubiquitous that it has become a stereotype.

I mean, one of the funniest properties Eddie Murphy has ever made was Coming to America. That was a comedic caricature to perfection.

So agreed, comedy doesn't have to be rooted in absolute realism to be funny.
