Watched a couple of the new episodes. Are they not trying to be funny anymore?

According to “the message”, you cannot be insulting of any group and you can’t do anything controversial.
“Punching down” is a big no-no.
There is no way a show like Crank Yankers would be funny when it is written by modern society.

I don’t even see how a prank call show makes sense in todays age with new tech and all

Hot take:
It never was funny, except for a skit or two.

I thought it was cancelled years ago.

This is the correct answer. Ditto for Impractical Jokers.

If by "years" you mean "a decade or two", I feel the same.
I had to look at the date of the OP, because I had a "what year is it" reaction.

I wish you had a pool so I could pee in it

They brought it back about a year or so ago.

Most people get spam/unknown calls all the time. Many probably answer them.

The stuff was always hit and miss, but the Special Ed stuff and Touch Tone Terrorists stuff was great.
I remember the TTTs pretending to be customer service at some shipper when people on the other end were losing their shite over a missing package.

I never found it all that funny either. It was a poor man's version of actual funny prank calls, like the Jerky Boys.
At the time when Crank Yankers came out, there was a weekly show on an mIRC channel called "PrankNet". It was basically a podcast run by a guy in Canada that would use calling cards to prank call people. Most of the time, he'd get numbers from people in the chat and call them, or would call businesses, police stations, etc. It was hilarious.
PrankNet went away for a while, then sometime later they started back up and got a little too ambitious with their pranks...Calling KFC's and convincing their staff that there was a gas leak and to smash the windows, getting hotel staff to turn on fire sprinklers, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage. I think the few folks behind PrankNet were arrested eventually.

I’d say the amount of people answering/expecting phone calls is decreased dramatically from the early 2000s. And the only people staying on to talk to scam/unknown numbers are either pranksters/scam baiters themselves or boomers that don’t really know any better and seem like low hanging fruit to troll.
Concept works a lot better with land lines and before texting and social media were the main way people communicate

It was actually a Wendy’s on the West Bank of New Orleans. I remember he had them take bricks out of the garden and smash the windows. Very fricked up but also funny….then it came out that the guy was arrested for anally raping a child in a church bathroom in Houston. So frick him and frick pranknet.

I have a buddy that answers them all. He either gets to let out his range and cuss out some poor indian, or he strings them along often times over multiple calls.
last time i was at his house he spoke german so they transferred him, while they did he told us about how he faked all his info and without giving any critical info had given a fake name, the guy comes on the line and is like "Ive been listening and now I have to report this" "its a crime and youre gonna be in big trouble" etc. It was great. we just laughed at him.

Yeah. In the early days, like in 2002-ish, the pranks were pretty harmless, yet very funny. And it was only one guy. I actually have a few audio files saved of those calls...I should upload to youtube some time.
When they came back, years later, they had a few guys and were more interested in destruction of property. I wasn't a big fan of the shift from "harmless."
I think the guy who got arrested for the rape lived in Beaumont / Port Arthur? ETA never mind. I see the article shows him in a town near Lufkin.
