There’s a crap ton the other way, too. Like Coupling, the British version of Friends.

In a rare turn of events, a successful U.S. version of a British show is All in the Family. The U.K. version was actually in three phases - Till Death Do Us Part (1965-1975); Till Death... (1981); and In Sickness and in Health (1985-1992). The British counterpart to Archie Bunker was Alf Garnett.

Not UK but Aussie.

That Kath and Kim show from down under was fricking hilarious.

The US version with Selma Blair was just dreadful, just awful, just Honey Boo-Boo awful. White trash Aussie humor doesn't translate to American white trash humor. But it was funny when the Aussies did it.

UK Coupling is one of the funniest sitcoms ever. US Coupling was a train wreck.

Steptoe and Son is a British sitcom written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson about a father-and-son rag-and-bone business. They live at Oil Drum Lane, a fictional street in Shepherd's Bush, London. Four series were broadcast by the BBC from 1962 to 1965, followed by a second run from 1970 to 1974.
There was an attempt at a US version as early as 1965:

There was also another one around 1970 by Norman Lear, w/Barnard Hughes and Paul Sorvino. That also failed.

Apparently Lear later reworked the show with black cast.

I'm a little surprised people aren't talking about Broadchurch (UK) and Gracepoint (US).

Although Gracepoint isn't anywhere near as bad as some of the ones previously mentioned.

I still watch this series every couple years. It's like comfort food to me. I go back to it when I'm sick or need to take my mind off things. I didn't even realize they tried to make an American version.

i couldn't stomach the US pilot of 'the office'. they copied the UK gag-for-gag on the pilot and i had been a fan for a few years and said 'this shite is cringeworthy'.

how wrong i was.

I read an article that they had only written the pilot episode to pitch the show. They had Gervais exec produce it and the decision to essentially use the same script was made to reduce the risk lol.

They wrote the rest of the first season after casting and actually knowing the personalities of the characters/actors

I did the exact same thing. The reboot was not good.

Yep, and his avi was him too! I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as I did at that bit.

Good God that was awful. Wasn't even filmed in the same style as the original Peep Show. In-betweeners is my all time favorite, modern, UK comedy with Peep Show a close second.
