When I saw Kill Bill in theaters, I was shocked when it ended with a PT 2. I don't remember it being billed as Kill Bill Pt 1. Still went and saw Kill Bill 2.

I agree, but what other choice do they have? The Broadway show runs 3+ hours long. Nobody will sit still that long in a movie theater. They don't do intermissions during films anymore. I guess this will be similar to the way they split the last Harry Potter book into 2 movies.

This is a little different than Mean Girls. I’m pretty sure everyone knows Wicked is a musical.

Also, if you’re complaining about Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba you have never heard the woman sing. I’m far more worried about Ariana Grande’s acting chops.

The musical is fantastic. I’ve seen it 3 times. The teaser looks.. okay. But I’m withholding judgement because I’ve heard a few leaked videos of the music and it sounds PHENOMENAL.

Ariana Grande is a fine enough actor to play Glinda and she has PIPES for days. I know nothing about Cynthia Erivo but after a 30 minute YouTube binge, she can also sing with the best of them and should be a good Elphaba. Idina 20 years ago would’ve been ideal but we can’t always have nice things.

The editing of this teaser was questionable but I still think this has a good chance of living up to the hype.

Did your dumb arse never even get to the part of Wizard of Oz where the wizard is exposed as a fraud and has been the whole time?

Wicked has had runs on and off Broadway since the early 00s. There’s been a wide range of women who have played Elphaba. Alexia Khadime played her in the UK I believe.

THANK YOU! I wasn't starting any crap, I had a legitimate question.

Saw the play on Broadway, the scenery, acting, music, etc. was all great. The story?

I ready the book for some stupid reason. What a steaming pile of shite that story is. I think the movie will do it justice. And whoever said Ariana Grande has the chops to pull this off????? LOL.

My biggest concern is maybe the CGI and it being overused.

Would love to see it be successful. I wish some of the bigger musicals would go the Hamilton route and release some of their early tapings on Broadway with the original cast. Idina and Kristen were so good in these parts.

I wonder if part of it is they only finished filming about a couple weeks ago (were delayed by the strike) and felt like they had to force something for the Super Bowl.

Same, but they can't really tell the story on film without showing the fantastical land of Oz. I'm curious if some of the scenes in the trailer are from the second film, mainly because they show Dorothy and her gang, who don't appear until Act 2 of the show.

That said, I have high hopes because they cast actors who can sing (Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey) and a singer who can hopefully act in Ariana Grande. I don't know if Jeff Goldblum or Michelle Yeoh can carry a tune, but their characters sing very little during the show, so they should be fine.

I've seen Wicked on Broadway 8 times at least maybe more. I did it once with a black actress as Elphaba. Doesn't matter because she's green :)

I think doing this movie in two parts, released a year apart is the dumbest thing EVER.

Movie versions of Broadway shows usually stink although there are quite a few notable exceptions-West Side Story, Hairspray, Jersey Boys, I'm sure a few others. I thought Les Miz sucked, Phantom sucked, Mamma Mia sucked (largely due to miscasting of Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan)CATS phenomenally sucked, So I'm skeptical but hopeful with the movie version of Wicked.

Cynthia Erivo

Was trying to place where I've seen her before and it turns out she was in the HBO adaptation of Stephen King's The Outsider a few years ago.

She played Holly Gibney, a private detective character who also appeared in Mr. Mercedes.

Yep.

I also got to the part where the Witch threatens to murder a little girl and a dog over some shoes.

Now somehow, this murderous b!tch is the hero because so many shitty women identify with her....

Funny how that gets glossed over now that Wicked has taken the place of the OG.

I saw it a few years ago and enjoyed it, but I had to keep telling myself that it wasn't at all about the Wizard of Oz, but a fully separate IP. Thinking about it like that made it ok.

And yeah, the theater was full of purple and pink hair women (not exaggerating that or judging it) and lots of overweight women that were by themselves.

It caters to the bullied, so it's not surprising.

Wicked as always been a feminist, anti-patriarchy masturbatory fantasy. I imagine the movie will be even more so, throwing in some race/class stuff just for fun.

The story? They had to take some serious liberties with the original to write it, that took me out of it.

Then you totally missed the point. It's taken from a novel specifically written to take liberties with the original story, that also was a novel. Most people who have seen the Broadway production think it's a fabulous take with a great story. It basically says that often, things aren't what they seem.

I've seen it on Broadway and the travelling production as well. Loved the musical. I'm not thrilled about the movie.

I never saw the musical (or read the book), so after seeing the trailer I was curious if the original Wicked was basically Cruella before Cruella.

That or Maleficent. It tries to make an antagonist, a protagonist, by telling the story from their point of view.

Like I said, I just think of it as a different IP altogether and I'm ok with it.
