And yeah, the theater was full of purple and pink hair women (not exaggerating that or judging it) and lots of overweight women that were by themselves.

It caters to the bullied, so it's not surprising.

I never noticed that in the 8 or 9 times I've been. Just speaking for myself I am not pink or purple haired, not overweight, never been bullied. I just appreciate the costumes and music and sets and it's a fun flip on the wizard of oz story.

That or Maleficent. It tries to make an antagonist, a protagonist, by telling the story from their point of view. Like I said, I just think of it as a different IP altogether and I'm ok with it.

Something that I think is a bit different than Cruella and Maleficent is that Maleficent is a total rewriting of the story where the villain wins. Cruella is just a back story where she’s still evil at the end, but you get why.

Wicked doesn’t change what happened in the WoOz, but tells you what happened beforehand, paints the antagonist in a sympathetic light, and then lets the “real” events play out while having an alternate ending that doesn’t really change what we know of from the source material.

That may sound like gibberish. Anyways, I liked Wicked and I’m sure I’ll have to go see this with family around the holidays. I don’t trust Disney not to F it up.

This is a great Broadway play. What I saw in that trailer looks like a CGI mess. Blah.

Did your dumb arse never even get to the part of Wizard of Oz where the wizard is exposed as a fraud and has been the whole time?
Did your dumb arse think The Wizard was evil?

He wanted to help Dorothy, but he didn't know how. He helped the Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow.

The green witch in TWoO was the villain, not the Wizard.

Glinda was the only witch that was good. She was also the one that told Dorothy how to get home.

Which side are the flying monkeys representing? Good, or Bad?

You have to remember that this musical was based on the novel Wicked by Gregory McGuire, not the L. Frank Baum original book. McGuire turned the story on its head. The novel is basically a political allegory, similar to Animal Farm by George Orwell. The musical strips away a lot of the political undertones, but keeps the main idea, which is the question of what exactly does it mean to be wicked.

The flying monkeys are Elphaba's helpers because she released them from their cages.

I mean, the character is green. Does it really matter for this one? It's not like a black woman portraying a white historical figure.

It's a feminist power-fantasy that only exists due to the hard work of the original, White male author and is offensive to his legacy....

PERFECT movie for 2024!

Um...no.

None of this exists without Baum's original.

Enslaving and terrorizing Munchkins, threatening a child and her dog....yep, if you don't understand that to be evil, you're a moron.....

Of course "muh patriarchy" ....

I'm not sure if a black actress has played Elphaba, but when I saw the show on Broadway, a black girl played Glinda and was excellent.

Cynthia Errivo is a seasoned Broadway performer and is more than capable of handling the role. I'm more concerned about Ariana Grande's acting abilities.

And in both of the roles it makes no difference what their skin color is. One is green and the other is a popular and pretty princess type girl.

Aside from looking up the current actress, the only person I can find historically to have played her is Idina Menzel, who is Jewish.

I'm not sure why it matters - the character is GREEN.

Seen it twice (oops...3 times) and never noticed that either. The theater was full of normal women and girls, mostly middle and upper middle class. In Houston, probably mostly suburban as well. Dressed nice and enjoying their night at the theater.
