Why don’t wizards in Harry Potter exploit the Muggle economy to get rich?

Stole this idea from a tweet but it’s a good point. There are so many ways wizards could exploit muggles and get super rich off of it. Maybe they do and we just don’t hear about it? What are some ways they could exploit muggles for wealth? Here is the tweet I got this idea from and this can be done without using ANY MAGIC

quote:

One of my favourite Harry Potter loopholes doesn't even involve magic. It involves exploiting the Muggle economy.

Hagrid tells us there are 17 Sickles to a Galleon. Sickles are silver, Galleons are gold. Simple enough.

Except gold and silver don't have a fixed exchange rate in the Muggle world. Their market value fluctuates constantly. Before 1900, the gold-to-silver ratio averaged around 16:1, which is pretty close to the wizarding world's 17:1 rate. Throughout much of the twentieth century, however, it averaged around 45:1.

See where this is going?

Wait until the market heavily favours gold. Melt your Galleons down and sell the gold in the Muggle world. Use the money to buy as much silver as possible, then take that silver to Gringotts and have it converted into Sickles.

Finally, exchange those Sickles for Galleons at the fixed 17:1 rate.

Congratulations. You've potentially turned a small pile of wizarding gold into a much larger pile of wizarding gold, simply by exploiting the difference between Muggle market prices and Gringotts' fixed exchange rate.

No Dark Arts. No Horcruxes. No elaborate schemes.

Just precious metals, a fixed exchange rate and a wizard who understands arbitrage.

Are you assuming they don't? These are their digs:

You think all of that comes from tuition payments??

The magic users in the show were notoriously retarded when it came to "muggle stuff." The Weasley's dad was proof of this.

well that one makes a little more sense, you can’t give away the secret so either you would have to pretend to be a Muggle or they would have to leave their life and live in the wizard world without powers

I don't know. I seem to remember a lot of memory erasing or memory changing spells flying around. Wouldn't be that difficult to pull off with a muggle wife, although perhaps not very ethical.

Another thing is that all the witches would have big lips, big racks, etc just like many modern women with the means to have them. At a minimum there would be zero unattractive witches in HP world. They'd all be using spells to make themselves at least attractive, if not outright baddies.

Yea I’d say sex trafficking is pretty unethical

Now that is a good point

The rules of quidditch are what make no sense.

If I remember correctly the snitch ends the game AND the points it counts for make the other stuff completely irrelevant

be ready to be even more confused

In official Harry Potter canon, Quidditch games do not end without catching the Snitch, unless both team captains mutually agree to call off the match (which is extremely rare) or a team forfeits/is disqualified.

There is no clock or timer in traditional Quidditch. Games can rage on for hours, days, or even months if the Snitch proves elusive. The longest recorded match in wizarding history lasted for three months.

While catching the Snitch ends the game and awards 150 points to that team, it does not automatically mean that team wins. If the opposing team is leading by more than 150 points, the team that catches the Snitch can still lose (as famously happened in the 1994 Quidditch World Cup final, where Viktor Krum caught the Snitch for Bulgaria, but Ireland still won 170–160).

Short answer- because it's a children's story and Rowlings didn't put that much thought into it. Magic was used as a "hey this is a cool different way to do X", for kids to imagine.

If it were reality-focused, all magic users would be at the top of the caste system in just about every facet of life.

Krum was an idiot, don't catch the snitch if your team is down by 150+

Just another reason why the game is retarded. Krum would go from chasing the snitch to actively trying to stop the other seeker from getting it. Blowouts could potentially be abnormally extended.

The whole HP world is beyond money. The only materialists were the goblins.

Think of Voldemort. Bro couldn't give two shits about money. He wanted power and control over everything. You'd think the most powerful wizard in history would have a dope castle somewhere in Norway or something, no, he hid out in ramshackle apartments because it was easier to be mobile, invisible and attack rather than defend.

Then, when it was all over, and he retired, he went and built a bone temple out in the middle of nowhere and hung out with zombies.

The witch hunts and burning had something to do with that.

Why would they need to when they can just conjure up whatever they want?

Yeah he was a meathead but he still sprayed Hermione’s guts.
