re: Why do we consider Pete Campbell a weasel and Don Draper a boss?

Pete is a whiny, spoiled a-hole, who cheated on Trudy, pimped out Joan, basically raped a neighbor, got his arse whipped in a fight by Lane Pryce and he resents Don for being Don.
Don is a self-made man. shite, he's the ultimate self-made man. He turned himself from Dick Whitman to Don Draper.

Trudy is also perfect and Betty is a count.

Ain't that the truth. Pete had that locked up and he threw it away. I would tear it up and be a happy man.

The first time Pete starts going for Head of Accounts, he tells Don something to the effect of
"I've earned this job, I've waited long enough"
at which point I believe he's about 26. He just expects everything to be given to him.
Don's personal life is a train wreck, but he's a bread winner at work, and despite everything horrible that he's done outside of the office especially in the last 2+ seasons, he's started an agency and grown it into one of the best agencies on Madison Avenue, and the audience doesn't even think he's actually even been on his game in that time. He's incredible at what he does for a living so we forgive him being horrible in other areas. Pete's biggest contribution to the firm was that his FIL held the keys to the Vick Chemical budget. More crap he didn't even earn.

I think the wives of the two characters play somewhat into the perception. Betty was/is an insufferable bitch, while Trudy is awesome.

That being said, I'm having a hard time with Don's actions this season.
same
I started to feel bad for him when Sylvia ended things but as soon as they showed him with Megan I was all "Oh yea, Don is being a huge shithead right now."

Hopefully everybody but Harry Crane dies the last episode so he can sit the Iron Throne.

The last 2 seasons, I've been hoping Don would get his. Seems like his co-workers are getting tired of his shite, too. Pete is at least up front about being a douche. Leaves the mystery out of it, and just weasels his way through life.

He's also a man of little integrity. Same as Pete. People just consider him a "boss" because of his anti-hero stature, and the fact that he's handsome and suave and authoritative/domineering in everything he does. But when you boil it down, Don is simply and flawed man searching for some truth that he will never find.

The problem is Don can still be Don when he wants to. And when he wants to, he is very, very good.

I wish we would get some more Ben Hargrove or Dave Algonquin stories soon.

Don Draper is pathetic. He needs to get over whatever issues he has, man up and take responsibility. People always say about "Don just handles it well". Psssh...at least Pete faces his issues instead of ignoring them.

Bob Benson will be running the firm by the end of the series

Just as long as Stan is head of creative.

Pete suffers from some very misguided hero worship of Dawn. His infedility, his ego, his lack of filter. It all plays like he's just tryint to do Don Draper better than Don Draper. Their positions within the agency also separate them. It's damn near impossible to make "accounts" look sexy or appealing. Meanwhile, Don comes up with a "wish I would've thought of that" idea every 3rd episode. He's Jordan. The average person cannot even fathom having his natural ability. I think we sometimes view his immoral actions as part of the process to get to that idea.
Also, Pete is a bitch.

They are essentially one in the same.
Did you listen to Andy Greenwald on Grantland this week?
If not, he actually discussed your exact point. He compared what Weiner is doing with Don and Pete to what David Chase did with Tony Soprano when Weiner was on staff.
Chase has said that he wanted to see how terrible of a person he could make Tony while still being able to make him redeemable and liked by the viewers.
Similarly, Weiner contrasts Don to Pete. They do almost the exact same things, but Don is intentionally better looking and given redemptive excuses for why he behaves the way he does ... his childhood was fricked, he can't love his children, etc.
I've said it on here before and been beat up, but Don IS a terrible person. He is a selfish, soulless bastard who is mostly void of humanity.

Absolutely. And this season he is descending further and further into the abyss.
All the booze and poon in the world will not save him. I cant see this ending well for him.
