Friends premiered when I was in 8th grade...it was a horrible show then; it is a horrible show now. It’s a chick show.

I agree that Friends doesn't really resonate today IMO. I mean, it does since people still watch the hell out of it, but it seems dated when you go back and watch it.
If you really want to see how unfunny Friends really is, watch the YouTube videos of the episodes without the laugh track.

It really isn't, but it's on Netflix and a lot of teens and 20-somethings who missed it the first time like to watch it.
This makes it culturally relevant. The two most popular t-shirts with my eighth graders are Friends shirts and The Office shirts. They love it, and they did not grow up with it.

You would be wrong, young kids and 20 somethings are watching the hell out of it.
It’s got decent characters and stories. It’s a good show. It’s not for everyone, but no show is for everyone. I can’t stand Fraser, but still recognize it as a great show.

6 terrible people living in a fantasy world of giant NYC apartments that none of them can afford.

Friends is good filler but it annoys me that they are all TERRIBLE people.

This same age group appears to be into Friends now.

They've mentioned on a few occasions that it's a rent-controlled apartment. I'd once thought that sounded outrageous for an apartment of that size, until I got my application denied for a similarly-sized apartment because I wasn't broke enough

Ross was genuinely unlikable. Rachel draws some disdain from the women I know who grew up poor and despised how spoiled she was but yes generally the likability of the rest of the cast was a good reason to enjoy it.
I stopped watching during the original run when the sexual connections became creepier (two of the central characters are brother and sister after all).
BTW it is interesting how the "Fat Monica" character is now a cause of the fat concerned critics to heavily criticize the show in retrospect. I can only imagine how much more outrage there would have been if she had hooked up with a Blair Underwood or Idris Elba type when she had more cushion in the tush.

you mean you don't understand how these people who don't have jobs except maybe a part-time barista can afford the lifestyle they lead with apartments in downtown NYC?
its completely believable.

how so? I've seen this sevearl tiems and I don't understand it..I'm not gonna say he's the best character ever or some tier 1 sitcom actor but I don't really find him unlikeable.

Look at the characters of Seinfeld, Fraser, Cheers. A bunch of mixed looking group.
Julia Louis Dreyfuss is hotter than Jennifer Anniston.

Ross was annoying and whiny. But I won't say he was unlikable/a bad character.
I don't understand how someone is obsessed/loves Friends, but nor do I understand why someone would hate it. I totally get why it was extremely popular, it's really well-done mindless TV. It's sophisticated enough for most (occasionally clever, NYC, etc.) but doesn't require a lot of thought and the comedy isn't "hidden".
It's great rerun TV, although I doubt I've ever purposefully watched it.

Same reason The Big Bang Theory and Two and Half Men were network tv powerhouses. All the 'tardeds
Those are both legitimately bad shows.
Friends is popcorn television, with a likable cast (what's up with the Ross hate here? He carries the show for multiple seasons), is super quotable, isn't too offensive or political, and has some generally clever moments.
No it doesn't challenge norms, or innovate in literally any way, but when you're looking comedies outside of the Big 5 (Seinfeld, Cheers, Frasier, Office, P&R), it holds its own. It's also generally rewatchable as great background television because most of the jokes simply rely on familiarity with the group rather than long episode setups.

Friends is THE most overrated show of all time.
I think people assume the wrong things when people say they "like" something, or that something is "good." Same thing happens with movies often. They assume "good" means that person automatically thinks it's the greatest thing of its category. (Happens with Marvel films when people say Infinity War is good, suddenly others think that means The Godfather's greatness is in question.)
Friends is a good show for what it is, I'd never put it above Seinfeld, Cheers or Frasier, etc., but for what it's supposed to do it is enjoyable.
