Why Are Movie Tickets Now Being Taxed?

I never had taxes on tickets in the past. How were theaters exempt from taxes in the first place?

What's bull is depending on where you live, like gas is the crazily disparate prices.
In most urban places $10 for a matinee...Other places $6-7.
And God forbid you live in NY or SF where it's $16 for a regular adult and no ticket even Matinee is offered sub-$10. The highest price is $19 for regular adult at AMC apparently in NY... Depending what borough you live in.
Movie theaters have gone restaurant. You can go to different parts of town and bargain shop even with the national chains like AMC. At least McDonald's is consistent nationally, city-wide, town-wide, neighborhood block-wide.
My area still offers $6.75 Matinee which must be on the very low end.
That's a crazy $4-12 swing depending on where you live. It's $60 for a teenager, his date and two small Cokes and a large popcorn in Manhattan.

Yep. Movie prices are OOC up here. I very rarely go to the movie. If I do, It is to see a "popcorn" movie and usually go during the day. My wife and I haven't been to the movie together in about two years. We usually wait for stuff to come out on video.

Also, movie theaters aren't exempt from taxes, and I don't believe they ever were

The one where I grew up even had it on the prices. This was back in the late 90s but I remember tickets were like $6 and the price was $5.55 plus 0.45 tax to get you to an even amount.

Movie ticket and concession prices now =
A couple with two children wanting to go see the new hit Disney/Pixar film on Friday or Saturday night will cost $100 if you buy food and candy in the theater itself. It's a joke.
We go to the movies in the afternoon (most of the time), plus we bring our own snacks. I don't like being robbed.

Just for reference, the studio usually take in about 60% of ticket sales the first couple of weeks that a new movie runs, then it graudually drops a little. And studios will often demand an even higher cut for the big blockbusters.
Point being, the crazy prices aren't all the fault of the theaters themselves, and they certainly aren't trying to rob you. The studios have a ton of leverage over the theaters, particulalry over the regional/local theaters. They often have to charge high concession prices just to break even.

I believe that's still how most every theater does it, even if it's not always explicitly stated.
The OP's theater probably just used taxes as an excuse to implement a rate hike. But I'm certain that they were paying taxes before the change (or that they were at least suppose to)

Celebrity Theatre does $5 Tuesdays
Two weekends ago me and my daughter went to see Lego Batman Sunday morning and it was $9.88 for both of us.

I'm more upset about the fandago fees being so high now. Nearly $6 four tickets.

Theaters have been in the popcorn business since the 70's. They don't make much from the movies.

The theater my wife and I go to is $11.75/ticket and $5.50 for 16 oz craft beer. Hopsecutioner, 420, etc. Better beer prices than a lot of bars.

Honestly, frick AMC. North Park they charge 15 bucks for a fricking matinee ticket and 19 at night. They also charge 15 dollars for a Bud Light. And the people that watch movies at AMC are shitheads, with 10 minutes of worthless commercials to tell me to buy a coke in the lobby.
Meanwhile down the street, I pay half that price at the Alamo Drafthouse, pay 1/3 of that for a beer of much higher quality, they personally go out and get the items I request, the seats are far more comfortable, they kick out anyone who is disruptive on a dime, their commercials are different and just tell people about actual events they're having that I am often interested in, and short of a handjob they'll do anything you ask of them.
Unless I have no other choice, I don't plan on stepping foot in an AMC again. They're just the worst.

Drafthouse: 7 dollars until 5:00, and is like $9.00 after that.
Really, $13 is the bar? That's low? AMC can frick off. They're ruining the industry.

Oh frick off. AMC once announced they were going to allow talking and texting in their theaters to attract more teens. They also serve $15.00 Bud Lights. And AMC also has negotiation room with the studios given how big they are.
Why do I never run into this bullshite with Alamo Drafthouse? Why am I not charged 12 bucks for a tub of popcorn and a coke over there? It's because they have a great product and they get repeat customers that never want to go anywhere else.

I took my mom to the 10:15am Friday showing of Logan at Perkins Rowe (the earliest time they had) and for the two of us it was about $20. We got a large popcorn to share and 2 drinks, which was another $20. So $40 to bring my mom out for a few hours wasn't terrible.
