The higher high is community. New girl never dips really it's consistent.

I'd say New Girl first then community.

Watch New Girl with your wife and Community solo. Anecdotally speaking, I haven't known many women that enjoyed Community for whatever reason.

Season 4 is Acknowledged as inferior.
Community is one of the best comedy shows ever IMO.

But there is a lot to unpack as why why show went meh for season 4 specifically. The shows creator, Dan Harman(Rick and Morty) got fired from his own show by execs. S4 writers just used the buildup to trope. It was actually Joel McHale and the cast that said we need Dan back. And the execs eventually relented.

Now, Dan Harmon is a strange guy - in the show he's Abed as a point of view - but Abed is much better than Harmon as a character.

That said, once the Dean character gets rolling, he's easily the best. One of the best ever.

If you don't watch Community, you're missing out on some greatness.

I like New Girl, it's more of an easy watch, but Community dives so much deeper.

Side note - Donald Glover doesn't leave the show until mid-season S5 - and there's a real Scrubs tribute before he leaves. I think it's one of the greatest subtle lines - Glover disses Zach Braff for leaving the show that made him famous.

I don't get the Community love. It gets straight up dumb after a couple of seasons. All of the imagination land stuff and Chang gets old..

I think I love it because it was just SO different. I remember watching the pilot and liking it, and then once it found its groove really loving it a lot. As I said before, there are definitely some "misses" in the episode lineup, but even those are generally entertaining or funny. But their hits are pretty damn amazing.

Also, I agree with whoever said that S4 is considered inferior by most. But I will say that during my rewatch a year or so ago S4 definitely did not stand out as bad to me at all. And I remember being so tired of the Chang/Changnesia shite originally, but it really wasn't that bad (or that long) at all upon rewatch. And S4 has some straight up gems in it too. I also liked S6 more during the rewatch as well.

Community is "better" in the technical sense, but New Girl is easier to binge. Both are on my Mt Rushmore of sitcoms though, and I recommend watching both.

Community has the highest highs and lowest lows. It swings for the fences again and again. They do some WILD stuff on that show and it is more about TV/Movies and tropes than it is about the characters

New Girl is great in its own right with some great characters, and is extremely consistent. It is much more paint by numbers than Community but still funny.

Both are great.

I would disagree that it isn't about characters....

It looks at "people," not characters through the lends of those TV/Movie tropes, and does one of the best jobs at explaining, without saying it, how entertainment reflects life and life reflects entertainment. It's kind of brilliant in that regard.

The metanarrative is both subtle and overt all at the same time.

I preferred the characters in New Girl more. Schmidt from New Girl was one of my favorite characters from any sitcom. I never cared too much about the plot lines as much as I did the conversations and interactions between the characters.

First three seasons of community are better than anything new girl did. But both are good.

They’re probably 2 of my favorite sitcomes of the past 20 years.

New Girl Start to finish is amazing.

Community I think is more of a required taste and at its peak is amazing.

If you prefer slightly
More grounded comedy. New Girl. If you like absurdism and reference comedy Community

My wife loves Community, though she has expressed frustration at how much might be going on at once (her focus deviates a bit, which makes it hard for her to enjoy movies like Airplane! with all the stuff going on in the background). Regardless, she does love the show. My ex-wife did too.

New Girl, Schitts Creek, and Arrested Development. I tried Community but couldn't get into it after a couple of episodes.

These are closer in proximity. You should give Community another go.

New Girl is a different sort of show than the above.

I like both a lot. I think community’s humor is smarter, for the most part, but I like the characters from new girl more.
