When will people admit that the premise of Star Wars just isn’t that great?

Look Disney has done a lot to try and destroy Star Wars I don’t want to argue that in this thread.

What I do want to argue is that Star Wars was never that great of a concept in the first place. I too love the original trilogy, but looking back on it, it’s amazing because of what they pulled off in the era it was released. When you dig into the story, it’s not very original, it’s full of plot holes, and a lot of it doesn’t even make sense.

now that the world is getting expanded greatly to a wide audience instead of just people who read the books or watch animated shows, it just doesn’t hold up that well to a modern audience.

Basically, in today’s world, Star Wars is not very original, full of plot holes, and kind of lame.

Let the downvotes rain

Nope, it’s a great premise which is why it’s still popular and has been infinitely copied.

The original Star Wars was based on the monomyth, the hero’s journey, one of the most fundamental stories of humankind. The young inexperienced squire sets off from a common land on a quest to slay the dragon, encounters strange and mythical things, overcomes hardship, gains wisdom from an elder, gets help from his companions, and then ultimately wins a decisive victory. The original sequels were a further expansion of the same themes.

Star Wars is a product of its time- it was a technical marvel in the midst of the Space Race and little more than that, but god forbid we talk bad about 80s media.

That being said, as someone who wasn't alive during that time and who doesn't hold any particular nostalgia towards SW, they should focus on where they came from and stop trying to "expand the fandom".

It was good. I was never an ultra Star Wars kid despite being born in that time frame. Having consumed all of it as an adult I do find it kind of funny how infallible the OT is to the super fans. It was good but IMO gets a massive sentimental boost.

It's pretty funny how apoplectic people get about newer stuff. I think a lot of similar themes so hated in newer movies also occurred in some of the OT and it's completely overlooked due to nostalgia. I honestly enjoyed the first two seasons of the Mandalorian just as much as most of the OT.

My kids have loved most of the Disney shows, Mando, boba, kenobi, andor. Ultimately Star Wars is a kids property and the super fans should accept that but there are a lot of grown up children out there. We’re not watching the new trash one as it doesn’t look very interesting and seems super woke for the sake of being woke.

It's still a huge brand, just damaged by Disney. The force awakens is the biggest film ever, domestically. Star Wars still resonates today.

lol I promise I’m not a part of the y’all you think I am.

Like I said Disney has been trying to destroy Star Wars and their new stuff sucks because they suck at making it.

All I’m saying is the at the OG Star Wars really isn’t that great. I know that’s blasphemy to people born between 1960-1980 and also to adults who watch cartoons all time, but it’s true

The Force Awakens was only big because it rode on the shoulders of the original trilogy. They immediately killed the goodwill of fans and continually stomp on anything that remains. I took my kids to see Force Awakens and never saw either of the sequels. I was a huge SW fan growing up. Same with LOTR and WOT. Frick em.

Mostly because parents got their kids into it, which was really my point about why they should reinforce the original series and improve it rather than create the same thing for a new generation (which is exactly what TFA did)

ETA: In contrast, Harry Potter has actually done a remarkable job at maintaining its relevance by staying true to the original (and pretending the Cursed Child doesn't exist). I'm sure 20 years from now HP will be bought and sold and someone will try to make a derivative, but it'll produce similar results to SW if they stray too far... imo

The premise holds infinite possibilities and because of that it’s great. However, the execution has been dog shite, milking the same damn family over and over again when there’s a billion stories you could tell not related to a single fricking Skywalker

HBO’s Harry Potter series premieres in 2026. The board is going to love the updates to Hermione.

Star Wars was sold and so was its soul. What we see now is nothing more than branding of a product which is being used by Disney to generate revenue for Mouse Inc.

Except it's a massive failure.

We've gone from this...

where the reports flat out state fans want escapism, to current day narcissistic activist pushing THE MESSAGE who gleefully self-insert themselves or spouses while mocking actual fans who grew up on this franchise. To them, IPs are less about taking the audience away but instead to be used as a 2 1/2 long struggle session.

Like our show or else, you're and "ists" or a "phobe".

Bold claim to say that a movie series that is the bedrock of science fiction and storytelling isn't that great. You're free to dislike it, but your take here is absolutely incorrect.

Yes, there are plot holes. Writers back then didn't have to deal with chronically online people dissecting every word and scene. They got away with a lot more hand waving because that's just how the industry was.

I'd like to hear you explain your lack of originality claim more.

Considering it drew from other sources (including westerns and samurai filme), it was (and is) great
