And not only must the women be non-white, we also must make them ugly as frick
I was really looking forward to Aviendha, based upon book descriptions, and the actress is best described as "not entirely unattractive." She looks NOTHING like an Aiel. As an aside, I do think that they got the Cadin'sor about right.
Elayne? She should have been an SI model, and the actress is, at best, "kinda pretty."
But we did just meet Faile, and I gotta admit that she is cute.

Wheel of Time and Song of Ice and Fire really sum up my growth as a reader. When I started reading them in middle school, I thought they were the best thing ever written. By the time I was in college and later, Book 8 and 9 were coming out and I realized they just weren't very good. They were verbose tomes sold by the inch rather than the word. Which one was it? Book 7 that was over 110,000 words and took place over ONE WEEK, and Mat (the best character) did not feature at all?
I read the first three WoT books and gave up. I didn't dislike them and I could see why people would love them, but his writing style was just not for me for some of those reasons. Way too much writing that just didn't mean enough to the story. I just don't want to know THAT much detail about every room and setting. Give me more story.
I cannot stand GRRM, legit really dislike that guy so I try to avoid giving him credit at all costs But to say those books weren't very good is kind of insane. My dislike for him as a person has dropped those books for me some in my fantasy rankings but they are some incredible books and not a lot of wasted words like Jordan.

IMO, Jordan’s prose got much better as the books progressed. The first books seems very unpolished. But I think the writing improved a lot when BS came in. But also I love BS’s writing style.

Watched the first episode last night, and there's plenty to nitpick, but it was better than what I recalled.. although I admit I barely recall watching season 2. Amazon says I did, but I guess it was over a year ago and I just don't remember it all.

First book was just droning on about the construction of stalls in the market, that we never saw again
He definitely got better

Comparing Robert Jordan’s writing to GRRM’s writing is like comparing Creed to Led Zeppelin.

They are different types of stories. Jordan wrote a story about heroes and good vs evil
Martin is a nihilist who hates heroism and the best you can hope for is to pull for the least shitty person.
I am convinced that his hatred of heroes is why he hasn't finished.

No, it's because he's good at world building and lore, and that's about it.
He's still light years ahead of a hack like Lee Child, who a lot of people here seem to think is a great writer.

In order to end it, someone has to win. The idea of making someone the heroic victor makes Martin's PeePee crawl inside his body

Well they cut out about 4 books of boring Elayne plot line in the opening of the 2nd episode of s3. What in the frick

It isn’t just about story. It’s prose, sentence level and just general narrative momentum and pace.

Martin has better prose, for sure
They are about the same in pacing
Sentence level reflects the type of story. It is the tale of a simple country farmhand. The sentence level reflects that, as it should.

Why will the Dragon reborn go mad? I thought that baw was special. Too many boss bitches in this show.

Because male magic was tainted to contain the dark one.
At least in the books.
In the show? Probably because something something toxic something something inferior to women.

My son loves it. He didn't read the books so that probably explains it. I don't think I finished Season 1.

He did have Jon Snow, who was the most Arthurian hero in the story.
** Spoiler**
But he also killed him off in the books, so you may be onto something.

Because the power men and women channel from is called The One Power (it's really from the True Source but to simplify it we'll just say the One Power.)
There are two different sides of it, like a coin. A female side and a male's side. The big bad of this show tainted the male side a long time ago so any man who uses the power like the women will eventually go crazy, which is why everyone (mostly the Aes Sedai) is afraid of Rand. If he goes crazy, he has enough power to pretty much kill everyone

Faile looks a lot like her descriptions from the books. Bain & Chiad are good as well.

To add a little more to what others have said, the One Power (magic) is split between Saidin (the male half) and Saidar (the female half) and the Dark One has tainted Saidin.
Along with this, there's also the aspects of using (channeling) Saidin and Saidar. Channeling Saidin is like trying to harness a raging torrent in that it must be dominated, whereas Saidar is more like a river of power that is embraced. As with other things, the show has really dropped the ball and visualizing the struggle of using Saidin.

Have to admit, season 3 is so much better than seasons 1-2. Or maybe, I’m just numb to how much Amazon messed up the original casting and first 3 books. Books 4-5 are my favorites.
Free Mat! Best character in the books and he’s barely featured; missing his best parts.
