Other things, like how they rushed the flight from Emond's Field to the point where it made Rand's blowup at Moiraine feel awkward and out of place... that makes me wonder exactly how much of a grasp on the story they really have.

The 1st episode, or scenes for that matter, could make you question it.

Edwene's 1st scene was her being happy about being inducted into the women's counsel. Like it was some lifelong dream. She actually thought the women's council was pretty stupid and was glad to let down her hair when she was being trained by Moraine. Right off the bat you're giving her a completely different impression than the book and author want you to have of her.

Moraine's 1st scene (if not 1st, it's early on) is her walking in the hall and showing off her ring and making it clear that she is an Aes Sedai, like that was a good thing and what she wanted the town to know. People were in amazement of it. In the book it tells you they are typically disliked (even after they saved the village) and they were there just as two strangers trying to keep their identity unknown. They didn't find out who she was until they fought off the trollocs. Plus for some reason they knew trollics were coming but waited until the attack to start fighting.

Again, I like the show but it's like they're going out of their way to make the show very different.

Anybody else not crazy about the gleeman? Wasn't expecting him to be an all black outfit serious Strider esque gleeman.

Another stupid question. Were there defining looks/characteristics of people of people in the books? All I got from book one is the red hair and Perrins a bit bulky. I know they are obviously going for diversity in characters but it seems to be a really high number of middle eastern actors

Except Rand (geneticall Aiel), everyone in the two Rivers was described as having dark complexion with dark hair and dark eyes. I always envisioned everyone there as being either Mediterranean or Middle Eastern.

Based upon the descriptions in the books, the actors are as follows. Rand looks about right, but it’s not tall enough. He should be about 6’5” or 6’6”. Perrin should be about three or 4 inches shorter than Rand, and he should be built like a defense of end. The actor is far too small a guy. Matt is fairly accurate.

Egwene snd Nynaeve look about right, absent the mole, though Italians or Lebanese would’ve been closer than a Nigerian and a Maori.

Lan is about how I envisioned him, but Moraine is too tall. Thom is too young and should have white hair.

Mining Village. The mining village smoothly consolidated several things. First, it replaced Baerlon while saving some set production money in building a small city. Second, it let them introduce Thom separately from the EF4 (Rand/Mat/Perrin/Egwene). That first episode didn't really need still another character introduction. Third, the only interesting thing about Rand/Mat traveling the road from Whitebridge to Caemlyn was the Darkfriend encounter. Playing with Darkfried Dana in the mining village probably makes that entire (boring) trip unnecessary. Hell, it may even make Whitebridge unnecessary as a whole, since Thom fought the Myrddraahl (and lost Mat/Rand) at the farmer's cottage. Even the dead Aielman let them introduce an important story element quickly and easily.

I do agree that episode 3 and 4 consolidated a lot of things that frustrated me about episode 1’s lack of expansion. I was losing my mind at leaving Edmond’s Field without Thom introduced.

After initial frustrations, watching with my Hodor wife and settled down.

As I watch the show, I am doing two things.

First, I am enjoying it stand-alone as a pretty good (not yet "great") visual story.

Second, I am comparing it to the written source material.

That's fair, if you can accept that the on screen material will fall short of your expectations.

Would you mind explaining this reference? I have seen it a few times and do not understand it.

Game of Thrones reference. During the GoT years we would have different threads for each episode, the Maesters thread was for the book readers and the Hodor thread was for the non-readers (we eventually had a middle ground thread where non-readers could ask readers questions and readers would do their best to answer without spoiling things).

That is the thing. I walk into this knowing that they have to edit the story down by half or more. They had no choice other than to consolidate scenes and even delete entire story arcs. So I have no idea what to expect.

My only “expectation” is that the television show story will vary significantly from the story told in the books.

As an example, it will not surprise me in the slightest if Elyas never makes an appearance in the television series.

1/3 ain’t bad.

Hodor was a reference to GoT threads for non-book readers.

This is true... but it's still hard to reconcile some of the changes even though I know it can't be a direct translation from book to screen.

I knew book readers weren't going to like this show before the first trailer even came out because no matter how much you want to you can't pace a TV show like a book. You can't flesh out characters, landscapes, and universes in a TV show like you can in a book
i think people just wanted more of a GOT/LOTR translation and less of Sword of Truth/Deathnote adaptation

4 episodes in, and my take is simple.

The two rivers stuff should have been two full episodes.

1 hour of character intros, more on Bal Tine (spelling), followed by 20ish minutes of the attack, and another half hour of heals, goodbyes, weapon transfers, etc. Make the small town bond seem more realistic and difficult to walk away from.

THey should say "Inspired by Roberts Jordan wheel of time."

instead of calling this wheel of time if they are gonna cut so many things out.

Episode 2 was dog shite and Shadar Logoth a disappointment with no Padan Fain. The frick are they doing with the character now? No Mordeth or what?

The Trollocs suck. Why does every scene with a character running look retarded as frick? Trollocs and humans alike.

Again I’ll echo. What the hell went into the budget? They’re VFX crew sucks arse.

And lmao at turning Nyn into a Trolloc slayer ala Arnold in Predator.

I’ll only watch just to see how much worse this gets.

Well shite. I’m definitely out now if that’s the case. A big part of Rand in his relationship with all 3 women and the dynamic it creates.

Showrunner is a titanic fricking tool.

That’s isn’t true. It’s not being cut.

He said it’s just going to be slightly more polyamory and less polygamy. So that poster is flat out lying.
