I'm 47 and watched Evil Dead for the first time last fall. Can't say that movie scared me because I'm almost too old to be scared of that stuff. Messed up? Yeah, it was disturbing and it stuck in my mind for a while. Definitely won't be going downstairs in some cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Never thought of The Exorcist as scary, more like a documentary on exorcism. It's not like the girl is coming after you.

The Omen, when the lady hangs herself by suicide and prior to jumping says "It's all for you Damien!". That's messed up.

Exorcist or The Omen

Yeah, they are but also try "The Entity" with Barbara Hershey. That was a movie about a demon who resided in a house. And it repeatedly sexually abused poor Barbara. But it is based on a true story. For real!

Edit: So very subtly during this movie you start to notice two glowing eyes peering out of the darkness. After watching it I fell to sleep restlessly. I woke up and noticed two frickin glowing points of light in the corner of my dark room. With a heartbeat of 180 I realized it was just a bit of light from the outside projecting through open spots between the drapes. Remember it is supposed to be a true thing. There are evil demons out there.

The original The Haunting

I was 13 when The Haunting came out and just scared me to the bone for some reason. Plus I had a teen boner for Claire Bloom after that.

Also a child of the ‘50s and grew up with every cheesy sci-fi and monster flick out there. Tarantula, Rodan, The Giant Claw, Beginning of the End, Them, the Creature movies, Forbidden Planet, etc.

Godzilla lived in my dreams and stomping in my neighborhood.

Not the scariest movies of all time, but horror movies I enjoy:

Thirteen Ghost and House on Haunted Hill

Similar movies that came out in the late 90s. I find them to be pretty fun watches.

You’re the only person I’ve ever heard admit to liking the House on Haunted Hill remake...so now I know there are two of us.

Freaked me out as a kid and I still make time to watch it every so often. Much better movie than people give it credit for. Famke Jansen is fine as frick too

Sounds like Exorcist and Paranormal Activity are the ones. I’ve seen the spinning neck thing. I’ve mid 30s, never seen it so I don’t think it’s going to hit like those of you who saw it as a kid. Although a few of you said you still wouldn’t watch it again so

I will say Session 9 and The Ring both came out when I was 8 or 9 and those 2 movies had me breaking out the night light in my bedroom for a while

I had friends who I recommend The Ring to and they watched it late after beers that night and said they were cussing my name.

The Ring knows age, these were guys in law school.

I would've hate to have watched it as a kid.

Watched it in 02. Made a post about my place resembling The Ring. Once goblins, monsters, etc come into play, my lack of imagination comes in. If it can’t happen in real life, it’s hard to budge. I watched way too many behind the scenes on how movies were made growing up ie broccoli being a pinch sound, makeup time and seeing actors get hours of makeup.

Anywho, my dad will watch any movie. I have watched plenty of movies with him and he’s always telling me what he’s currently watching. He has a bad memory(recovered alcoholic and doesn’t take care of himself). I mention the Ring and he instantly remembered being creeped out and that one got under his skin.

I think it’s interesting the different kinds of scary/horror movies that get people. A wide variety. I rented the Exorcist as it was the most upvoted movie. Just moved into a place and Verizon failing me again. Three bars, can’t stream.

Also, it’s out of the ordinary for TD guys to openly admit vulnerability. That’s emotional intelligence. Bravo. Hey, fear is an illusion and I don’t believe in it, but a psychedelic given to me under perhaps the scariest situation you could imagine an ordinary person being in wiped out fear. (It involves the law) Been trying to induce fear and nothing. Multiple bong rips and settling into a horror movie late at night in the sticks seems interesting.

Big thank you to all who recommended something and engaged. I really wanted some answers and y’all delivered. Keep em coming.

The original flatliners & the people under the stairs, I was just young enough for them to mess with me. Billy Mahoney, the bully in kiefer sutherland’s trips, really got to me. And the woman from people under the stairs freaked me out.

3 men and a baby.

Seriously, can you even imagine being a straight bachelor living with 2 other guys and then a baby shows up on the doorstep?

The small spaces they crawl through in the caves gives me anxiety every time. Imagine dying from being stuck in a small arse tunnel. No thank you. Won’t see me cave exploring ever because of that movie.

This. This right here. My aunt was dying of cancer when this came out and looked like she did. I still couldn't watch that movie again. Hell no.

I would say it has more scary elements than the second two and less comedy, but i still consider it comedy horror.

I saw the original Halloween on TBS one Halloween night with my dad when I was about 10. For the next several months I refused to go outside alone at night. I was even afraid to take the trash to the road. And if I ever saw someone else outside down the street, they were always Michael Myers, and they were coming to kill me.

Storm of the Century. The idea that someone can take your child, raise it in a way that it doesn't recognize who you are is pretty scary.

Psycho was scary when I first watched it alone.

Aliens. Took me YEARS to get through the whole show...Now, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. Just superb combination of space, fantasy, horror, drama, and incredible visuals. No CG makes it so realistic, and sucks you right into the movie... just an AWESOME work of art!

Runners up: American Werewolf in London (gosh, that first transformation!!!) and The Howling

The exorcist terrified me as a pre teen and I rented out every horror film in that place by the time it closed

Cannibal holocaust also fricked me up pretty good when they cut that guys dick off and I was like 11 ugh

They were otw out of business so they rented anything to anyone at that point. Plus it was Archer's only video store
