I have to nominate:

Terms of Endearment.

I like Debra Winger (mostly from Forget Paris - majorily underrated comedy).

But she's a good Mother and her husband sucks and cheats on her non-stop and she's trying to raise these kids - and then the only good person in the movie, gets Cancer - and when she gets Cancer and dying, her shithole son blames her for the breakup with his Dad and doesn't even hug her when she's dying...and that's all she wanted.

She was begging him to love her and hug her and he wouldn't.

That was fricked up.

Brian's Song. I haven't seen it in a long time but it was just sad AF.

ETA: One that I recently saw was 'A Monster Calls.' Son of a bitch, it makes me tear up just thinking about it.

There is a difference between as movie that has a very sad scene or a very sad ending compared to a truly Sad movie...

Old Yeller has one of the saddest scene in history but was a wonderful family film..

Truly Sad Movies..Schindler's List was a sad movie from the very start...It was not designed to have any joy...

The Passion of The Christ...Even if you are not a believer, the brutality as depicted in this film is tough to watch..

Any movie about the War of Northern Aggression that didn't end up with us killing every damned yankee from the Potomac to the Canadian border.

As a sport's fan, Brian's Song was the same. I still tear up when I hear the theme song from the movie

Me too. In fact I heard someone on the radio quote the Sayers line "When you drop on your knees... ask God to love Brian Piccollo too.", and THAT made me tear up.

To the OP... My Mom used to love watching a movie called "Madame X" just to bawl.

Great flick. A woman is blackmailed by her hateful mother-in-law into abandoning her husband and young son and slides into a life of abuse. A fellow letch plans to blackmail her now politician husband over the shame of his wife, so she kills him.

On trial for her life she is represented by her now adult son and the husband and mother-in-law don't realize it's her until the end of the trial when she (already in fragile health) dies.

Dear Zachary, especially because it is real. However, it really leaves you more emotionally angry than sad..

Some movies mentioned in this thread have happy endings so I am not sure they are sad.
