Not a movie, but there’s a Disney short called The Little Matchgirl which is by far the saddest thing I’ve seen on film.

yeah, I've seen that one and it is real tough to get through.

Yea - I distinctly recall the book in 4th/5th grade. I guess it's a way to get children to deal with the subject of death at a young age, but man was that book rough.

Nankyoku Monogatari. Which literally translates to Antarctica Story. English title of Antarctica. Paul Walker did the remake with 8 Below which did this movie zero justice. This movie used to come on Showtime back in the 80s.

First thought before opening the thread.

Now, Pops Midnight wasn't much of a crier before mom passed away. However, he cried like a baby for that movie back in the day. Cursed it for how sad it was.

sheer volume of tears? Gleason hands down for me.

I watched Gleason last night. Holy shite! That poor family is going through hell and the worst part is that they've got it relatively good when compared to Joe Blow with ALS. No Gleason Gras fundraiser for Joe Blow.

Steve Gleason is such an inspirational guy. I doubt many people could be as optimistic as him when faced with that diagnosis. I know I'd want to check out long before I got to where Steve is at. He's done tons to raise awareness, make voice technology more available, and lobby for ALS patient rights. The movie shows his down moments, but that's one resilient bastard. Nobody can ever say that he didn't go down swinging.

I feel bad for his wife. She's been dealing with this for six years. I saw her a few years ago and she was noticeably thinner. You see it in the movie, too. She even makes a remark about it in the commentary special feature. She was thin/fit to start with and had gotten sickly thin, presumably from the stress of taking care of her husband and a toddler. I was happy to hear (towards the end of the movie) they were able to hire additional help.

But, to your point, it's a sad fricking movie. The Gleasons and Variscos seem like great people. I wish them peace and comfort.

My kids both loved that book/movie, and hated their teacher for making them read and watch it.

For those of us who remember the 60's, I bawled my eyes out watching West Side Story. Also a made-for-TV movie called Go Ask Alice.
