Vietnam War-Full Metal Jacket

At least half the movie is boot camp not even in-country. Platoon is the answer, warts and all.

Uh your point is training does not count as a War Movie falls kind of flat. Platoon was a good movie, but myself I prefer FMJ. These are all just opinions.

Pork Chop Hill, maybe.
Don’t guess MASH would be considered a war movie

It is pretty sad because there were many stories to tell.

"Inchon" was a great story but a very bad movie.

I would say war - a real war that actually happened - has to be a central, overeriding theme of the film.

I would consider Paths of Glory and the Deer Hunter to be "war movies" despite the fact that maybe 20% of the film is actual war, but the war itself just permeates all of the other scenes and shapes the characters and their actions.

Schindler's List takes place during the war but it's more about the the holocaust and the dehumanization of the jews (concurrent social policies) than it is the German war effort.

i think it can be broken down into 2 categories:
a. war as a major underlying theme (eg. deer hunter, schindlers list)
b. movies which depict actual battles

when i hear "war movie", i think of category B

Best, or most enjoyable? Because if the latter is the criterion:

Here’s five good ones not yet mentioned:

To Hell and Back (Audie Murphy bio)
War Horse
Halls of Montezuma
Hamburger Hill
... and Battle Cry.

As a Marine grunt who fought in Vietnam, I submit that Platoon and Hamburger Hill are far, far more accurate in all respects. No one’s close, not even ApocNow.

FMJ is entertaining as hell and an accurate Boot Camp movie but it grossly falls apart for accuracy — actually quite absurd — when it reaches Vietnam.

As for WWI, I don’t think there has been an accurate movie yet made about that carnage. Some good, dark ones but not yet an epic to capture it. The recent 1917 made a good effort but comes up just a bit short.

Korea? So much fertile ground for a good young director. Pork Chop Hill, Sgt.Rutledge, Bridges at Toko Ri and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness were nice ones.

1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Black Hawk Down
3. Glory
4. Full Metal Jacket

That’s my list for traditional “war movies”, but if we’re talking movies where war plays a factor in a story that isn’t necessarily about “the war”, I’d throw these out as personal favorites:

1. Last of the Mohicans
2. Three Kings
3. Valkyrie
4. Good Morning Vietnam

Also, just one that hasn’t been mentioned that always really stuck with me and I’m curious if anyone else remembered/was moved by this one like I was:

quote:

In the winter of 1944, American soldiers led by Will Knott (Ethan Hawke) are assigned to capture a small squad of German soldiers posted in France's Ardennes forest. Tired of war, the Americans, having already lost half their division, discover that their German enemy is equally unmotivated to fight. With Jewish soldier Stan Shutzer (Arye Gross) interpreting, the Germans and Americans agree on a plan that will let the former surrender without violence -- but then, tragedy strikes.

To me, those are the 4 movies that are best war movies and captures a separate time in each movie. They are all historical for what they did in movies.
