My God! Where do you start? It is debatable what belongs in the top 20, much less the top. I will offer a pretty good top 10 I found but want to know what you think.

10) Platoon (1986)
9) The Thin Red Line (1998)
8) Inglorious Basterds (2009)
7) 1917 (2019)
6) Dunkirk (2017)
5) Schindler’s List (1993)
4) Full Metal Jacket (1987)
3) The Hurt Locker (2008)
2) Saving Private Ryan (1998)
1) Apocalypse Now (1979)

How big do you think Mt. Rushmore is?

Platoon is way too low

Pretty shite list really. While there are movies on there that I really like like Inglorious Bastards it is more a fantasy flick then a war movie. Also Schindler's list while set in WW II is really not a war movie. I also have a real hatred of The Thin Red Line but others love it. For my list I am going by War.

Civil War-Glory and Ride with the Devil
WW I-All Quiet on the Western Front (original), 1917 and Paths of Glory
WW II-Saving Private Ryan and A Bridge Too Far
Korean War-Can't think of one sadly
Vietnam War-Full Metal Jacket
Modern Wars-Black Hawk Down

May be a re-title of the thread to "Favorite War movies"?

The Mt. Rushmore gimmick is getting a little stale

I think Black Hawk Down is the best war movie to come out in the 21st century. 1917 is a close 2nd.

ETA: Changed it up because I forgot BHD came out in '01.

Not saying this is on the Mt. Rushmore of war movies, but the movie Memphis Belle is one of my favorite war movies out there.

Pork Chop Hill, maybe.
Don’t guess MASH would be considered a war movie.

I would say war - a real war that actually happened - has to be a central, overeriding theme of the film.

I would consider Paths of Glory and the Deer Hunter to be "war movies" despite the fact that maybe 20% of the film is actual war, but the war itself just permeates all of the other scenes and shapes the characters and their actions.

Schindler's List takes place during the war but it's more about the the holocaust and the dehumanization of the jews (concurrent social policies) than it is the German war effort.

If you can find an English version try Tuntematon Sotilas or (Unknown Soldier) in English. Most expensive Finnish production of all time...at 7 million Euros.

Thin Red Line is based off of the original book to this story. Easily in my top 10.

*Note- has a scene that set the biggest ever movie explosion Guiness WR.
