I would consider Paths of Glory and the Deer Hunter to be "war movies"

I don't know it's just all so nebulous. Paths of Glory is definitely a war movie...but like you said, you don't see much battle...just the pain of war like Gallipoli.

I've seen lists which rank Casablanca #1. There are takes place during wartime and fighting movies.

If it just takes place during wartime, shite, the list is huge.

I think it would easier to narrow it down to "actual battle scenes" that are the major part of the movie.

Vietnam War-Full Metal Jacket

At least half the movie is boot camp not even in-country. Platoon is the answer, warts and all.

I’m not sure if you could call it a war movie. It’s more like an aftermath of war.

But “Taking Chance” is one of the most realistic movies I’ve ever seen. Kevin Bacon plays an Army Colonel that decides to be an Escort for the body of a kid from his hometown that was killed in combat.

Fury is a criminally underrated war movie.

I’d also throw Last of the Mohicans in the mix as best war movie set in America.

I debated it as it fits as a War Movie, the movie is pretty awesome
