Changing King's inevitably bad ending and some other parts is doing it justice though.
Not at all. One of the core themes was changed. King wrote a book about a peaceful man who is corrupted by evil forces within the hotel. Kubrick's Jack character was always crazy and evil, and the hotel just brought that out once and for all.

It was King's #1 reason he hated the movie. But I do agree with your assessment of King's adaptability.

Most King novels have a solid first act, a dynamite second, and a dismal third.

I remember being engrossed in Under the Dome, but holy crap the ending was an utter waste of time.

You mean we didn’t need to know about vagina tightening surgery in an epic tale about the mafia?

It’s truly bizarre that Puzo was writing this once in a lifetime story and thought, “Okay, time to get back to Lucy Mancini’s medically deformed vagina. My readers won’t like it if I don’t tie up that lose end.”

Stephen King has said that Jack Torrance was based on him - he was drinking too much, it was affecting his marriage, he hurt his son while he was drunk. In the novel, Jack was a decent guy trying to do right but the spirit of the Overlook Hotel steered him the wrong way. In the movie, he's an a-hole who is abusive to his wife and son from the get-go.

This one. At least 90% of the dialogue is straight from the book, probably more. Both the movie and the book are great.

The “iron man” ending was a joke in the book but they used it for the movie

The everyone’s happy when Mark gets aboard scene was also directly referenced in the book as a joke for when they made a movie about his story. And that’s exactly what happens in the movie.
The only problem I had with the movie is they ignore Mark being a mechanical engineer with his secondary specialty as botany. He does some pretty advanced stuff for a plant guy especially with the pathfinder programming. That’s nitpicking thought

I can forgive everything, even cutting out the tension of the dust storm during his trek across Mars, because they did this scene from the book:

nah, this actually veers pretty far from the books.

Overall similar, but a lot of wandering along the way.

Along the lines of Stephen King, I loved The Stand (the 90s miniseries version). The book is pretty long, but I thought they did a great job of staying close to the material.

By the same director as The outsiders (Coppola) but a different author (Grisham), here's one that was almost perfectly adapted from the book:

The Rainmaker

Also, an all-star cast:

Matt Damon
Jon Voight
Danny DeVito
Claire Danes
Danny Glover
Mickey Rourke
Mary Kay Place
Virginia Madsen
Roy Scheider
Dean Stockwell

Probably the best Grisham adaptation ever put on film. Much better and more faithful than The Firm, The Verdict, and the Pelican Brief.
I absolutely love The Rainmaker. It never gets talked about here.

Rosemary’s baby?

It is one of the few where I like both the book and movie.
