You might as well just say you don't really want to watch westerns.

Open Range.

No doubt. Recently watched it again and forgot just how awesome that movie is.

Oh and:

Unforgiven
Dead Man
Ravenous
Tombstone
The Proposition
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Open Range
3:10 to Yuma
Seraphim Falls
The Claim
The Good, the Bad, the Weird
True Grit
The Tracker

But seriously pre 90's westerns are where it's at more specifically pre 80s westerns.

I knew I was gonna get for asking post 90's. Just in the mood for a "recent" western. Have seen most of the 80's ones.

Thanks for the suggestions.

If you ever want to have a fun afternoon watch Rio Bravo (1959) and El Dorado (1966). They are pretty much the exact same movie. John Wayne stars in both. Hysterical to me that they re-made it 7 years later with the same leading actor.

The Proposition blows post-1990 Westerns out of the water. 3:10 was damn good though

Favorite of the "oldies" is The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Lots of people have mentioned Unforgiven, which IMO is the "best" movie about the west since 1990. Dances w/ Wolves is also really good. And I enjoyed the True Grit remake that came out recently.

Tombstone isn't as meaningful as those, but it is highly entertaining if you want something that is more of an action movie.

And you are missing out by limiting it to only movies since 1990. Check out some of the old ones w/ Clint Eastwood like The Outlaw Josey Wales or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Just watch "Once Upon a Time in the West". If that doesn't change your mind about the 20 year limit deal, then frick you.

Pretty much. But anyway, to echo some already mentioned for the past 20 years:

Unforgiven
Tombstone
The Good, the Bad, the Weird
True Grit

That's like saying you are a big opera fan but don't want to hear any written before 1900.

The golden age of westerns was the 1950s

If you want to see westerns open up your mind -- for your own sake.

and FWIW, the original version of 3:10 To Yuma (1957) is a masterpiece that blows the remake out of the water

Dear god man. Westerns is personally my favorite genre. And like %80 or more of the best westerns of all time are per 1990.

But, if I could only watch one in the time frame you are giving it would be The Assasination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford. It's long and slow. So if you want a shoot em up then this ain't for you. Depicts the last couple years of Jessie's life. This movie is freaking beautiful too is you care about that stuff. Also, Brad Pitt haters can go on because he is ridiculously good in this. It also has Sam Rockwell who is awesome and Casey Affleck should have won best supporting actor that year. It's not for everybody I know, but it is definitely one of the creepiest westerns of all time if the the eeriest ever. Really shows what a sociopath JJ really was.

If you can't get you hands on that then go The Propisition or Tombstone. The Proposition is a very believable movie and Guy Rithcie is where it's at. Tombstone is the best popcorn western ever, nuff said. Tigerdroppings asks my location I say I'm you're huckleberry. Most people don't even get why that quote is so awesome.

Also, Appaloosa is worth a watch. Not as well known but a really cool western. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen make a good pair. The only draw back is that they make Renee Zelwegger so ugly it's hard to bear. I mean she's not the prettiest girl in the world but she's not the ugliest. She is literally the ugliest person who has ever lived in this movie. She is smoking hot in Cold Mountain compared to how they made her look in this movie. And she's the chick both of the guys like. I really don't understand why they did that.

Edit: I'm a big Eastwood western fan but Unforgiven is the most overrated western of all time. I just don't care for it, Eastwood's character just drives me crazy.
