I was watching Rocky III with my 13 year old earlier this week - after which she proclaimed confidently this was the best Rocky of all Time…

But when I watched it when Clubber confronts Rocky in front of his statue - I never noticed this before in dozens of viewings - but it seemed to me Clubber was exactly correct in everything he said until he propositioned Adrian… literally everything he said about deserving a chance and Rocky ducking him - rang very true to me and he was actually quite articulate about it - saying he deserved a chance…

One could argue - save the cartoonish insulting of Adrian - he may be one of the more wholesome characters in the entire Rocky series… he was Mike Tyson-esque but without the dark side or at least that was never addressed. He was an extremely hard worker from the streets of Chicago - who was just a boxer…

anyway - great movie - great series - but am I crazy for having a new respect for Clubber?

Been a while since I’ve seen it, but isn’t there a whole scene where he confronts Mickey because he knows it’s all true? And Mickey confirms he’s been avoiding making that fight bc he thinks Rock will get destroyed

They throw in the Adrian line because otherwise, he’s not much of a villain or that different from Apollo creed

Clubber was clearly inciting Rocky to fight him, so it was calculated.

His lesser flaws were that was rude and unsociable, which likely came from being such a lone wolf. His greater flaw was that he had an explosive, violent temper. He didn’t control himself well, as evidenced by shoving Mickey before the first fight.

I think he’s a realistic villain, though. I’ll tell you this… back in the theater when this movie came out, people straight up HATED Clubber. Mr. T really got people worked up there… and it’s no surprise he became a pop culture sensation immediately afterward.

Obviously. This isn’t even “movie villainy”. It’s just standard fare in fight promotion

I'm just glad it wasn't Mr. T's first role, as a lot of folks can have a hard time separating the villain on screen and the actor.

If this had been his very first job he probably would have gotten threats as well as been typecast.

That and they made him look like a total monster. It was only later you found out that him and Stallone are only about 5’10.

I've never seen the actual movie, but the Mad magazine version of Rocky 3 100% contains this scene

The first time I ever saw Mr T was on the 1980 tv show “World’s Toughest Bouncer” (or something like that). The final event in the competition was a boxing match with the 2 finalists. Mr T was one and some big Hawaiian bouncer was the other. It was ridiculous to see them in the ring together but when the bell rang, Mr T ran over to the big bouncer and whipped his arse. Supposedly, this is where Stallone saw Mr T and offered the role to him.

I actually remember that.

And I wasn’t slighting his toughness….just that in the movie they made him look like he was a lot bigger than Stallone.

Rocky III was a big deal the summer of 1982. Was huge. Mr T was a big part of that playing the perfect villain.

No, you're not.

And Lang had to get Rocky in the ring somehow. Offering Adrian some BBC was the perfect way to do it.

This.

Rocky: “Setups?”

Mickey: “Nah, they weren’t setups. They were good fighters, but they weren’t killers like this guy. He’ll knock you into tomorrow, Rock.”

….

Mickey: “Because the beating you took from Apollo should have killed you, kid. It didn’t. It was my job to keep you healthy and to keep you winning.”

I'm old enough to remember watching "Games People Play" TV show and seeing Mr. T for the first time going through some sort of parkour maze... Kind of like a late 70s version of Wipeout but I can't remember much else about it every he rang a bell at the end. This was well before he became any type of star and I loved him immediately. I remember the mohawk and the announcer saying something about him being from Chicago. I think he won as well.

I know I'm not making that up but no one ever talks about it.

Mr T was by far the best Rocky adversary. He had no obvious archetypal flaws. Dude was just about the action.

Mickey was the villain. Has Rocky beating up tomato cans and ducking real fighters like Clubber. Also totally responsible for the pre-fight fracas that led to his death. It was some harmless trash talking like in every fight until Mickey escalates it by calling Clubber an ape. At least Paulie tried to be somewhat coded with his racism.

Clubber is easily my favorite Rocky opponent. Loved his trash talk.

Stallone may be 5’10” with his platforms on. I’ve stood directly next to him while he was scouting a bar for The Expendables. He came in a dive I worked in circa 2008 to look around. I’m 6’1” and I felt a decent bit taller than him. His bodyguards were big though haha.

I will give him this… the man straight up oozes star power. Sort of awe inspiring to be standing next to him.

Well that was the whole point.

Movie makes it very clear Mick was setting up tomato cans for Rocky....

But Rocky being Rocky was oblivious. So he wasn't ducking Clubber but his handlers were which is why Clubber got personal to wake him up and incite him to fight.
