That's like me hating Russell Crowe because he was never a real gladiator like me.

Having a thing for scantily clad, sweaty men doesn’t make you an actual gladiator

John Wayne is a case study in how to select a script.

Nothing he chose stretched outside his ability and he knew the framework that would make him successful.

Maybe parts were written to his style. He was selective, borderline over exposed at times, but never left the audience feeling exhausted from his presence.

Something to be said for that.

And Roy Rogers wasn't a real Cowboy.

And Christopher Reeve couldn't really fly.

My Great-Uncle was a Marine in the battle of Okinawa during WWII and loved John Wayne movies...and loved Sands of Iwo Jima. Even if soldiers could think it corny...he just liked the persona and story being told. That's an actor's job.

Yes admittedly my post didn’t really address the main question posed about whether John Wayne was a good actor. It had more to do with the notion that John Wayne (the actor) was a heroic figure… which is like admiring the actress that plays Flo for her dedication to to safe driving and affordable car insurance. Ultimately, I concur that one need not be a great American hero to portray a great American hero in make believe movies

He had a presence. You just don't teach that.

Frankly, this is a silly criticism. Like my grandparents, little too young for WWI, little too old for WWII. He primarily played cowboys, rather than "military badasses". Should he be ridiculed for not being a "real" cowboy?

Should Peter Falk and Telly Savalas have been ridiculed for not being "real" cops? Should Steve Buscemi be limited to only playing firefighters?

Silly take is silly, despite your father's wartime service.

And strangely we aren't expected to hold the rest of Hollywood to any sort of "moral" standards.

Hollywood is full of pedophiles, junkies and all around shitty people and we're supposed to worry about a guy who was too old to be a grunt not being in the military?

Ok.....

He loved his country.

I'll let Maureen O'Hara explain it and if HER word isn't good enough for everyone, then GFY:

Maureen O'Hara...

Yes but he was also very smart as he took films that he was well suited for him. Very seldom did he go outside of his range.

It wasn't intended to be a take or a criticism. I was just pointing out one different perspective that I thought would add to the discussion. Honestly, he probably just thought John Wayne was a pussy compared to the other guys that he knew and served with, and famous people like Jimmy Stewart, and Bob Feller (in sports) who interrupted their careers to fight. I'm not asking you to agree.

Maureen O'Hara and Elizabeth Taylor would have sacrificed a child to get in front of a camera and a microphone at that stage in their lives.

The silly take is you guys holding up a movie actor as a hero.

Not one of my heroes.

John Wayne IS one of my top 3 movie stars.

Actors and Entertainers aren't heroes, hell they aren't even true "artists".

I posted the video because I have a crush on Ms. O'Hara and for you to think they did it for the attention is pretty stupid.

He may have thought the same about you.

Melting over a great actor who brought great joy into a lot of people's lives is indicative of larger problems.

America's entry into World War II resulted in a deluge of support for the war effort from all sectors of society, and Hollywood was no exception. Wayne was exempted from service due to his age (34 at the time of Pearl Harbor) and family status (classified as 3-A – family deferment). Wayne repeatedly wrote to John Ford saying he wanted to enlist, on one occasion inquiring whether he could get into Ford's military unit. Wayne did not attempt to prevent his reclassification as 1-A (draft eligible), but Republic Studios was emphatically resistant to losing him, since he was their only A-list actor under contract. Herbert J. Yates, president of Republic, threatened Wayne with a lawsuit if he walked away from his contract, and Republic Pictures intervened in the Selective Service process, requesting Wayne's further deferment
.

quote:

U.S. National Archives records indicate that Wayne, in fact, did make an application to serve in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), precursor to the modern CIA, and had been accepted within the U.S. Army's allotted billet to the OSS. William J. Donovan, OSS commander, wrote Wayne a letter informing him of his acceptance into the Field Photographic Unit as a special forces commando, but the letter went to his estranged wife Josephine's home. She never told him about it. Wayne toured U.S. bases and hospitals in the South Pacific for three months in 1943 and 1944, with the USO.During this trip, he carried out a request from Donovan to assess whether General Douglas MacArthur, commander of the South West Pacific Area, or his staff were hindering the work of the OSS. Donovan later issued Wayne an OSS Certificate of Service to memorialize Wayne's contribution to the OSS mission

People make it seem like he avoided the war but he tried to join and serve.

Relax. I am not melting...more amused that some people react so strongly. Why do you care so much if someone you don't know thought John Wayne was a pussy??

If you mean my dad, I can assure you he didn't think that. If you mean John Wayne, I guess maybe he would have but I am not sure why he would come to that conclusion.

Always wondered if it was his skill or just being John Wayne that propelled him into legendary status.

Well, what made him John Wayne? Also, acting in those days compared to today is not the same. Go watch black and white movies........totally different style compared to today as well.
