Let's talk about what an "Actor" is.
An actor is someone who pretends, period.
They aren't artists, they aren't philosophers, they are people who pretend to be someone else whilst reading lines written by someone much more talented and creative than they in most cases.
Worrying about how "good" an actor is, well that's sort of stupid.
Acting is about entertaining someone by pretending, that's all.
So considering that being a "good" actor isn't necessary relevant to being entertaining, why does it matter if he was a good actor or not?
Garbage men are more important than actors, just trying to see your angle here.

Do you enjoy watching him act?
Then he's a good actor.
That's why some actors are good actors, others might be good comedic/dramatic/action actors but bad at other types of acting.
Heck, no one knew Leslie Neilson was a good comedic actor until Airplane! (the man had been acting for over 20 years by that point). Suddenly he gets an entirely new career as a comedic actor.

In music, if it sounds good, it is good.

It's incredible to watch "Forbidden Planet" THEN watch him in "Airplane" and think these are the same guys.

As others have said he could be great when he really wanted to be. As a younger actor he took some chances on different parts and was pretty darn good in them... but the movies tanked and nearly took his career with them.
So he took roles that he was fairly certain would play to his strengths and make money (yeah, the Genghis Khan one wasn't a great choice but you'll have that if you make that many movies).
The people that worked with him said he was a tremendous actor when he needed to be and that he was a complete professional. Wayne didn't miss a mark and always knew his lines. Some of the all time greats in Hollywood have praised Wayne, even though they likely had vastly different political beliefs.

Add The man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Ok...it's 2022, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is still my favorite movie of all time. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin were brilliant in it. I don't give a rat's a55 about anyone who says otherwise.

You forgot The Quiet Man...he was great in that as well.
But, I thought his best work was The Searchers. Ethan really is not a likeable person....but then neither is Scar (Cicatriz). Jeffrey Hunter works well as the par opposite of Wayne's Ethan Edwards character.Vera Miles as Laurie was very good as was the guy who played Charlie.
It was Wayne at his height of power and ability.
Hope that movie is NEVER remade

The more I think about it I guess we only have Great actors and Good actors. Great would be Jimmy Stewart and Good would be John Wayne.
I cannot stand Jimmy Stewart in anything. It's his voice.

John Wayne was excellent at playing John Wayne. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Pretty much this.
You nailed it.

A must-watch for any Nielsenologist. There are moments, especially in the scene where Frank Burns tries to examine him, where LN's facial expressions and line readings are totally Frank Drebin.

My Dad was a WWII vet…
So was mine. In combat. In Europe. And, he always took us to movies and, usually anything with John Wayne in it. Mostly, for the entertainment, but occasionally the message.
