Was Full Metal Jacket a great movie or just a great first half of a movie?

I mean nearly all the memorable things about this movie are when they are in basic. It’s almost like two totally different movies, before the war and during the war.
I personally liked it all the way through, and it does have some memorable moments during the war like the prostitute scene.
Thoughts?

Not for me. Some great lines and visuals in the 2nd half.

The second half is criminally underrated, especially since I've become older. When I was younger, I was mainly all about the first half, but man the second half is pretty awesome on its own. It's rugged and real, and tense as frick. It has the greatness that is the sniper scene, and of course, Animal Mother.

First half is so much about R. Lee Ermey's performance as the Drill Sergeant in Boot Camp, and he dominated most of the scenes.
With the 2nd half dealing with their deployment in Nam and the shite show they run into. For me, both halves are very intense.

It is the greatest movie about Vietnam, period.

You'd better flush out your head gear, new guy. This isn't about freedom; this is a slaughter. If I'm gonna get my balls blown off for a word, my word is "poontang".

Same thing could be said for Stripes.

The first time I saw it I was in the Marines. When Cowboy walked in front of that opening, I remember thinking he just walked out of cover and boom, dead.

quote:Hell, the answer to the "How can you shoot women or children?" question is enough to elevate an entire film, not just the second half.
Colonel : Marine, what is that button on your body armor?
Private Joker: A peace symbol, sir.
Colonel : Where’d you get it?
Joker: I don’t remember, sir.
Colonel : What is that you’ve got written on your helmet?
Joker : “Born to Kill, ” sir.
Colonel : You write “Born to Kill” on your helmet and you wear a peace button. What’s that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?
Joker : No, sir.
Colonel : You’d better get your head and your arse wired together, or I will take a giant shite on you.
Joker : Yes, sir.
Colonel : Now answer my question or you’ll be standing tall before the man.
Joker : I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.
Colonel: The what?
Joker : The duality of man. The Jungian thing, sir.
Colonel : Whose side are you on, son?
Joker : Our side, sir.
Colonel : Don’t you love your country?
Joker : Yes, sir.
Colonel : Then how about getting with the program? Why don’t you jump on the team and come on in for the big win?
Joker : Yes, sir.
Colonel: Son, all I’ve ever asked of my marines is that they obey my orders as they would the word of God. We are here to help the Vietnamese, because inside every asian there is an American trying to get out. It’s a hardball world, son. We’ve gotta keep our heads until this peace craze blows over.
Joker : Aye-aye, sir.

This assessment is spot-on, in my view. I've always thought of this film as two separate movies and I enjoy the first half much, much more than the last.

I like all of it, but yeah the first half is much stronger than the second half. Hartman was just incredible.
