It is the greatest movie about Vietnam, period.

I mean, Apocalypse Now makes a hell of an argument.

Says something for Kubrick that he had the Vietnam War as almost a release after the mindfrick of an ending to the first half of that film.

I mean nearly all the memorable things about this movie are when they are in basic.

The funny thing is all the lines a remember are from the second half. But I think you’re right that the first half is more entertaining. Awesome movie either way.

The ending is great also. All of those young kids, and that's what they were singing the Micky Mouse Club Theme song as they walk off.

Great movie all around. The two halves compliment each other so well. This wasn’t the first time Kubrick did this, 2001 is pretty much split up into 4 different parts.

Literally lol..love this movie even more since I served in the Marines and played in the sandbox in 2003. One of the best Marine/Military movies to me ever.

The first half pleases the comic book movie loving crowd. The second half is for adults.

It becomes a real movie in the 2nd half.

Basic training was probably the easiest to shoot and could be its own short film but it's praised simply because of one guy's performance.

In fact, it's too long. I mean when you go back and watch it over and over, it becomes...okay we get it, Private Pyle sucks, move on to another topic.

But I do wish the 2nd half was as tight as the first half but maybe that was the point. Safe in the US tight storyline and rigid...first half, go to Vietnam and everything is all over the place chaos.

Animal Mother alone makes the second half awesome.

Colonel : You write “Born to Kill” on your helmet and you wear a peace button. What’s that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?
Joker : No, sir.
Colonel : You’d better get your head and your arse wired together, or I will take a giant shite on you.
Joker : Yes, sir.

I love the contrast between the colonel and Hartman. Hartman got them ready for anything and this Colonel thinks he's being intimidating but Joker damn near has a smile on his face because he can't take the guy seriously.

prepping a vietnam era movie currently and rewatched it for inspiration ... you can certainly tell a good portion of it was shot on a backlot in London, which for some of it took me out of the moment (as chronicled by the great book by Matthew Modine "Full Metal Jacket Diaries"). A must for any fan by the way.

Since Michael Herr helped with the script ... you feel the reality of war through the dialogue and moments he captured in "Dispatches".

One of my all time favorite movies, but....

First half is arguably perfect and a 10/10

Second half is a 6 or 7/10 at best.

Sort of like Saving Private Ryan- first 30 minutes and last 30 minutes is as good as any war film ever, but middle 90 minutes is an unwatchable dumpster fire.
