I get that, but this isn't "art" decisions. This is politics, pure and simple.

(ETA: Plus we've seen everything they made before.)

Yeah but they are still humans like everyone else. Maybe they have become more radicalized in the past decade like everybody else. We wouldnt have had 5 different threads about casting choices for movies months before they released a decade ago either.

The more people focus on this shite the more the directors will. It's only natural

Pretty big red flag that Variety is circling the wagon months before release

I cannot believe a media outlet completely tied to (and aligned with) the DEI/woke agenda of Hollywood and the Academy would post such an article.

Wonder if those quotas might apply to an all black cast?

It’s about time we have some legit backlash against these quotas.

Et tu Nolan?

that’s because nobody would know the cast until the poster was released. And even then you’d have to see the poster at the theater or in an advertisement.

quota started applying in 2024

Oppenheimer was 2023

2026 Oppenheimer:

The usual suspects would go to the mat for it too, and everyone that questioned it would be "anti-woke"

At the time you could get away with behind the scenes people filling the quotas. He had a bunch of women in behind the scenes prominent roles.

The Academy from what I understand isn't letting them get away with that anymore.

Forget that Achilles and Helen of Troy are both fictional characters

Sure, they are. But Helen of Troy's appearance is clearly described in the story. There isn't much room for interpretation there.

quote:

mythological fable replete with a giant Cyclops, six-headed Scylla

What if they gave the cyclops two eyes and the six-headed Scylla one head?

It's just dumb. Because we know generally what their physical traits are.

These same people criticize the whitewashing of old Hollywood harshly, but doing the opposite now is no big deal. You can’t have it both ways.

Also, Helen of Troy might be a fictional character, but she may also have been based on a real person. For millenia the illiad was treated as historical truth, later the whole thing was treated as myth. The more recent discovery of the ruins of Troy have put the whole thing in a gray area. It seems like most historians agree that Troy existed and at one point in the distant past was completely destroyed. The fantastical elements are surely fiction, but the basic story may well have occurred.

I am of the opinion that actors should fit the character. So Genghis Khan shouldn’t be played by John Wayne and Helen of Troy shouldn’t be played by Lupita Nyong’o.

There were no changes to the requirements since Oppenheimer won.

Google AI for "Oscar's DEI quota"

quote:

Beginning with the 96th Academy Awards (2024), films must meet two of four Representation and Inclusion Standards to be eligible for Best Picture. These standards mandate diversity in on-screen cast, production crew, studio development, or creative leadership to encourage representation of underrepresented groups.
