I've seen all 3 episodes twice and read this whole thread and I still can't figure out where its headed

Got a good idea who the killer is...
Also, I think the atheistic outlook of this show is ironically too "preachy" to be realistic. There is a point where it can take you out of the story.

"The Story" is only half the story. The character development is the other half and the atheistic outlook and Cohle's atheistic phylosophy are central to that.

Sulphur boy checkin in.
Does Nic have a sister named Nicole, went St Louis? If so, I knows her.

Oh jeez get a grip.

How is saying the show is a little too preachy a sign I've lost my grip? That's my opinion and anyone who has remotely paid attention to the show could understand that is at least a rational conclusion.
The irony in your post is you thinking someone having an obviously rational thought equals losing their grip when, in reality, that's a sign you are losing yours.
Of course, the logical line of reason I pose above falls in line with Rust's on the show which makes my conclusion ring even more true in juxtaposition to yours.

i don't think the perp is really going to turn out to be that big of a deal. I think the real story here is what happened to these two men in that 17 years
Agreed, the story is about how the case pretty much wrecks their lives. (And I don't think Marty has seen the worst of it yet.)
Remember when Rust says you never know when something in your notes breaks the case wide open? Check out this image on an HBO site: Light of the Way. Rust finds that Rianne Olivier was murdered in a somewhat similar fashion which leads him to a photo from the "Light of the Way" school yearbook.
This is pure speculation but it kind of struck a nerve with me. Look at the image and see if anyone looks familiar. Here's a few hints: Pastor Theriot, Danny Fontenot, Charlie Lange, Dora Lange(married name), Reggie LeDoux, Rianne Olivier, the sex crime kid that did B&E's and whacked it, the Madam/Hooker from the trailer park, the Tall Man (?), and probably the 3 dead girls in the folder at the end of episode 3.
Deep and Dark.

Neither side in the show has been shown to be "right" so far on that matter.
There's likely a reason why Rust is so outwardly and excessively against religion (and God? and humanity in general?), and it probably has a lot to do with the trauma he's experienced.
Being an atheist is not a sign of a mental or moral problem.
But, in psychology, we'd see him ranting about religion in that particular way, while noticing all his other peculiarities, and we'd say "something is going on there."
I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.

This....sit back and enjoy the ride that is this show.
Its fun to speculate but to try to nitpick every little detail is a bit silly. Its a TV show, not real life.

None of those people really look like anyone in the year book picture to me...where is charlie lange? where is Reggie Ledoux? Where is Theriot in that picture? Theriot would be at least 10 years older than the rest of those kids

I still have no idea where this is headed
I've been contemplating an idea...remember the conversation int he car between Marty and Cohle where marty asks if he is not a christian then why does he have a cross in his bedroom? Cohle's answer is that he contemplates the moment in the garden where Jesus agrees to willingly let himself be crucified...
Well, I believe Rust Cohle knows they didn't get the real killer in 95 but for some reason knows the powers that be will never re-open the case without a big fight...so he is painting himself in a terrible light to the new detectives to make them question his competence in the investigation...allowing himself to be crucified willingly to have th ecase re-opened. He has told the detectvies about himself having visions, drinking, doing drugs, etc...not painting a very stable picture of himself.
I do think he is also trying to glean everything the detectives know about the case so he can once and for all go solve it himself or perhaps even mete out justice vigilante style to those responsible in the end. I think he and Marty end up working together again in the end to capture/kill the killer or at least solve it in some way.
