I just realized just how similar the preacher's sermon is to Rust Cohle's ramblings at the end of the episode.
Nothing we are currently experiencing is real, we are prisoners of our own consciousness.
Interesting.

Hence why I said they atheistic philosophy is ironically "preachy" in this show. Rust is miserable and he wants everyone to join him.

Does the preacher have similar motives? They are preaching similar things. I don't think it takes away from the story but illustrates a large portion of the story.

According to the show the preacher has a motive but that motive is power. Rust's is pain.

My theory: the governor puts pressure on the detectives to solve the case fast (governor is covering for someone). Rust knows that the guy they found guilty isn't guilty. Cole probably knows, but was framed in some way to push him out of the force. The governor is gone, a new body was found, and the new investigators have opened up the old case. Rust is trying to cover for the old governor (Rust knows who is guilty), while Cole is just bitter about the whole process, but does not know who actually did it.
Rust covering for the governor drove his relationship with Cole into the ground.

Rust and Cole is the same person.
It's Ruston Kohle and Martin Hart.
Rust and Marty.
But I'm pretty sure I agree with what you're saying anyway

I finally caught up. Hell of a show. Rust reminds me of myself. Not sure if that's a good thing.

I knew I fricked up the names. Forgot to preface my post with that
Anyways, Marty's actions in this case are 100% opposed to Rust's core beliefs. That's why the split between the two occurs, and I think we'll find out soon why Rust was blackballed from the department.

Someone in this thread said this show is approaching The Wire's status... While the show is top notch, i wouldn't go that far yet.

Well, it's definitely too early to put it on that level. But I've never been so sucked into a show before. This show has started fast and has increased the pace on each episode. Really fricking good.

Just watched the first episode and this show is going to be fricking amazing.
