I'm obsessed with this show.

Me too. These two weeks will be hell. I candle the one week break but two weeks right when things are heating up is unfair.

Just finished reading every pg of this thread. If TD wins best series, this thread should be runner up. I've rewatched each episode twice. Going back for another round after reading this thread now. Pizzalotto has certainly introduced several characters that could end up being the perp. His pace of play is also tremendous.

this WILL happen in some capacity. not sure if they will work on the case together (I think they will), but we will definitely see them interact in the present (2012) timeline.
Definitely; it's going to be great to see their 2012 selves interact.

i don't think the perp is really going to turn out to be that big of a deal. I think the real story here is what happened to these two men in that 17 years

Thats what the writers have said in almost every interview about the show.

I found it interesting that Rust is talking about senses deceiving people in the bar and his date looks remarkably like Marty's wife.

The best stories are about the character development and not the plot directly in front of you.
I don't really know what you are talking about, and apparently the King in Yellow is a highly researched, expansive mythos. So I doubt I will delve to far into it. Therefore, I am not doubting anything you infer or say about the King in Yellow.
However, the characters are much more of a focus thus far than the actual murders (as evidenced by the copious amount of seemingly unnecessary-to-the-murder-investigation personal stories and details we get in the flashbacks), and their actions (or inaction as the case may be) are going to dictate the plot. In my amateur opinion.

Yup. The "case" is just a backdrop

Considering all of the details given and references to detectives' analysis, the "case" is just as much a part of the story as the relationship between Marty and Rust
After all, show is titled "True Detective", not "True Bromance"

you guys need to watch the 12 minute long "making of" True Detective video that HBO put out. it can be found on youtube. it doesn't give away the farm but you can get a bit more of the direction this is heading in from that video which includes MM and WH talking about their characters

You missed it big time. Its "True Detective," not "True Investigation." A Detective is a person, i.e. a character.
