Hart / Cohle "Off the Grid" - I believe that Cohle is involved beyond what we've been told. While I agree that he has been investigating this "off the grid" since 2002, I think that we find that he was actually investigating it prior to 1995 and it was why he actually came to Louisiana. I think he stumbled onto the "Yellow King" cult while he was in deep cover and needed to get out of narco and into homocide to pursue it. I found it interesting that he already had piles of literature on the subject (and little else aside from a mattress and the footlocker) in his apartment from the beginning (remember their conversation at the crimescene).

This is my working theory after last nights episode.

I think that Audrey (the slutty daughter) is killed in 2002. The powers that be use this to get Marty (and by extension Rusty) taken off of the case.

At this point Rusty figures that Audrey being murdered had more to do with trying to get him off the case than Marty. He realizes that the people pulling the strings know enough about him to know that he won't just give up just because it's not "his case". The next logical step would be to kill him to permanently remove him from the situation (a move that would be much less suspicious now that it's not even his case and they can easily pin his murder on one or more of the criminals he has worked with while he was undercover).

Needing space and time to find out exactly who is involved and knowing that somebody politically connected wants him dead , Rusty brings his career in Law Enforcement to an end and decides to go off the grid. A grieving and pissed off Marty initially offers to go with him to figure out who killed his daughter, but Rusty needs a man still on the inside.

He knows that if he just up and quits directly after being taken off the case TBTB will keep an extra close eye on Marty to make sure he is not giving Rusty police resources to work the case or worse use Marty or his family to get to Rusty (because at this point Marty and Maggie are the closest thing to family he's got).

To throw the scent off and fool people into believing that Rusty is the last person that Marty would risk his neck for they stage a "Falling Out". They have a public argument about some kind of betrayal (like Rusty sleeping with Marty's wife or something like that) and Rusty quits on the spot and immediately goes to ground.

So for 8 years Rusty has been working the case and identifying the players and Marty has been giving him help where he can.

Why does it work? Although we have been led to believe in the beginning that Marty and Rusty were never really friends, the evidence has shown that to be just another lie to the 2 current detectives. Look at Rusty's life before he met Marty (living in a bare threads apartment and no friends) and after (He allows Marty and Maggie to drag him into their personal problems and lets them set him up with Maggie's friends. You think he would let just anybody inconvenience him like that?)

Also look at Marty's attitude towards them accusing Rusty this past episode. He was pissed off and more than a little protective. Also in the previews they show Maggie taking up for Rusty. So why lie how close they are to him?

TLDR version- Rust and Marty have been playing everyone for fools for years and are gonna wreck shop real soon
