Yes, but mainly government (and maybe slightly religion based on the travelling church dude).

Which again, makes me believe they are still working it on their own.

I wondered about that as well. It sure as hell seems like Rust could still be undercover in some capacity, as shitty as he looks.

Incredible show. Finally caught up with thread (pages being added alamost as fast as I was reading). Just a few of my own observations and thought on the show without the benefit of a rewatch:

Pacing - The pacing is fine. Someone mentioned Casino, I was thinking the Godfather, but the point is the same: some of the best stories that have been made have taken less than three hours to tell the entire story, including the backstory and character development. They have plenty of time, the pacing is perfect.

Hart's daughter - Definitely exposed to the cult early on based on the barbie's and the drawings. I also belief that it's the Grandfather. The scene this week with the tiara cemented the daughter's early exposure to the cult for me. Thre are strong references in The King in Yellow to diadems and the bloodline of kings and, of course, there's the crowm of antlers. I also think that she is sheiding her younger sister and resents her for her normalcy which is bought by her sacrafice. I also think that she is dead in 2012 and that it plays a part in both the falling out that Marty and Rust have and in them ultimatley coming together to continue their investigation.

Hart or Cohle as the killer - I have no idea where NP is taking this. IF one of them is the killer, it's Hart. That said, I don't think that it's either of them.

Hart / Cohle "Off the Grid" - I believe that Cohle is involved beyond what we've been told. While I agree that he has been investigating this "off the grid" since 2002, I think that we find that he was actually investigating it prior to 1995 and it was why he actually came to Louisiana. I think he stumbled onto the "Yellow King" cult while he was in deep cover and needed to get out of narco and into homocide to pursue it. I found it interesting that he already had piles of literature on the subject (and little else aside from a mattress and the footlocker) in his apartment from the beginning (remember their conversation at the crimescene).

i get that, but is the catharsis for the audience of rust/marty, or for the "fourth wall" of us?

if it's for us, who is the tragic figure? i'd imagine it would need to be marty

I think the catharsis is in the first place us. But also the characters in the story who tell stories "to get through the goddamn day". The tragic figure in Aristotle is the one who achieves "awakening"--recognition of the truth of reality. So I don't think Marty.

im starting to think that maybe the story doesnt end at the end of ep 8 and maybe there is a cliffhanger.

Yeah you might be right about that. Rust as Tiresias to Marty's Oedipus.

Pretty sure it has, but it's been stated time and time again that this is a stand-alone, 8-episode arc of a season. Next season will cast new actors and be a completely different story.

You should get all the closure you want in three weeks.

wouldn't marty have to be the focus of a tragedy, though?

He seems to be set up for this...especially if his daughter is killed or involved with the K in Y

Rust as Tiresias

that works to a large extent. in terms of discovery, he already thought along the same lines as the cult...just maybe not TO THAT EXTENT. maggie could do it (esp if her dad somehow is involved in the cult)
