I found it entertaining even though not very accurate in the portrayal of boot camp during the WWII era-----or any era for that matter.

In my opinion "Full Metal Jacket" nailed boot camp in that era of time with R. Lee Ermey as the Drill Sgt. and the rigors he put his recruits through.

Was it trying to be accurate?
I never got the impression that was the goal.

Obviously not, thus my comment. Neil Simon is a comedy writer for the most part and it reflects in so many of his movies. It's like asking Mel Brooks to make a movie about boot camp not make it funny.

I mean it started as a play. Accuracy was not the goal.

I watched Biloxi Blues in the theater in Biloxi. I don't remember hating it...but I don't remember liking it as well...my Dad was stationed at Kessler.

It's one of Simon's autobiographical plays, meant to fit in between Brighton Beach Memoirs and Broadway Bound. Like his other autobios, it's loosely based on reality and his true experiences. I doubt that his brother or his brother's roommate attempted suicide, but that's the starting point of The Odd Couple.

And to the OP, the performances in this film are top-notch and Walken is outstanding. Extremely quotable film.

The marketing for the film didn't do it any favors. The poster made it look like a romantic comedy with the romance with Daisy as the focal point. She was an extremely small part of the film.

I actually watched when it in the Lakeside mall movie theater. Walken was pretty good. It's a typical Neil Simon written comedy. Very underrated movie IMO.
